Newport Hawks: Darkhorse Team in County Hoop Circles The Newport Hawks must be con sidered the "dark horse" team in the county basketball race. In what Coach Douglas Schafran de scribed as "a rebuilding year," the Hawks did their rebuilding in the first two weeks of the season. Since Nov. 21, the Hawks have won six straight and now possess a record of eight victories and two losses. The Hawks have been win ning the close ones, the mark of a good team. The Hawks have averaged 49 9 points per game while their oppo nents have averaged 48.2 points. Three of their eight victories have been by four points or less. The Hawks have won three of four games played against county opponents. They hold victories over Morehead City, Smyrna and At lantic. Atlantic won one of the two "practice" games scheduled between the two schools. The Hawks and Pirates have two more games scheduled and these will be the ones that count in the county standings. Coach Schafran, in his first year at Newport, has been limited in bis selection of players. Five men have carried the burden for the Hawks in their winning streak. Co-captains Larry Kirk and John ny Mason, Johnny Turpin, Tommy Gillikin and Billy Wade have start ed and played most of the time in the past five games. Two of the most pleasant sur prises for Newport fans are the performances of Turpin and Wade. Both boys played as reserves last year and showed promise of com ing through as starters this sea son. At the end of the pre-holiday games, Turpin was scoring over 14 points a game and Wade was scor ing better than 11. They, along with Mason, are accounting for most of the points. Kirk, who missed the first five games, has been coming on fast and should be even more of a scoring threat when the Hawks begin the second half of their schedule. Gillikin is the top rcboundcr for the Hawks. The rangy center has Douglas Schafran . . . leads Hawks been a good defensive player, and, though he does not shoot much, can hit when he fires at the bas ket. People who were selling the Hawks short before the season opened are beginning to realize that here is a team capable of beating any team in the county. With only five experienced players on the team, the Pirates have built a record of five victories and four defeats. Coach Roy Cockcrham is count ing heavily on the return ? of one player, Marhsall Saunders, to life the Pirates into contention for the county championship. The Pirates, always short of ma terial, have been hard-pressed to keep five men on the court .when two or three players have fouled out. Coach Cackerham says that Saunders will give the pirates six first string players. The five players who have been carrying the load so far have been Roger Harris, George Golden, Stevie Mason, Bobby Nelson and Sammy Salter. These players, paced by the sharp shooting of Harris and Nel son, have been scoring an average of 51.9 points per game. Oppo nents have averaged 52 points per game. Against county teams the Pirates have won four and lost three. In "practice" games, the Pirates have defeated Smyrna twice and divided two with Newport. In games that count in the stand ings, the Pirates have divided two w\th Smyrna and lost one to Beau fort. The Pirates will begin the sec ond half of their season next Tues day when they play host to Dover. Scoring averages for the five regular performers at Atlantic follow: Games Pts. Avg.
