Dan and Sam, drove to Salemburg Sunday to take Roma Wade, who enrolled at Edwards Military Institute They recently returned from Union Mills, where they took Larry Wade, now a stu (lent at Alexander .Schools. Cel and Mrs. G. D. Gamble were in Durham several days last week while Colonel Gamble was under observation at Duke hospital. Mrs. W P. Freeman has returned home from a visit in Norfolk and Richmond, Va. While in Richmond she was the guest of the Rev. and Mrs. A. Purnell Bailey. Mrs L. A. Daniels spent several days last week in Rocky Mount with her mother. Mrs. W. H Par rish, who is confined to a hospital. Donald Miller. USN, of San Diego. Calif., is spending his leave Newport Club Officers Named of Meeting Mrs. John n. kell> was hostess to the Newport Home Demonstra tion Club Thursday night at her home in Newport. The new officers for 1960 are as follows: president. Mrs. Victor Mannino; vice-president, Mrs. Floy j Garner; secretary. Mrs. Claire j Gagnon; treasurer, Mrs. Jim Kelly, j Mrs. Floy Garner, home agent J was the speaker of the evening. | She discussed the various problems which arise in using credit and some of the advantages. During the business session, the members discussed the curb mar ket, clothing closet and different projects to be undertaken during the year. The members voted unanimously to give a donation to the March of Dimes. Mrs. Kelly served homemade pe can pie and coffee during the social period. Mr. and Mrs Peter Anthony Fol ey of Norfolk, Va., spent the wetfc end with Mrs. Foley's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Royall. Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Truitt of New Orleans, La., are visiting relatives in the county. They are guests at Bud Dixon's Motel. Mrs. Oglesby Honored At Shower, Card Party Mrs. Billy Oglesby was honored at a surprise stork shower and bridge party Wednesday evening, given by Mrs. Jerry Norris and Mrs. A. B. Vick Jr at the Norris home. Mrs. Oglesby was presented a corsage of useful and attractive baby items. Camellias and glad iolas were used in arrangements throughout the home. The hostesses served pound cake squares and punch. Mrs. Oglesby was showered with gifts. High score was won by Mrs James Webb, second high by Mrs Paul Cordova and low by Mrs Herbert Phillips III. Mrs. Webb also won the floating prize. Mrs. Loutit tntertains At Party on Wednesday Mrs. M. J. Loutit entertained at a dessert bridge and serabble par ty Wednesday afternoon at her home. Special guest was Mrs. Carlena Monroe of Atlanta, Ga., houseguest of Mrs. George Whittle. Arrangements of white narcissus were used for decoration. Sand wiches, cookies, nuts, mints and coffee were served prior to play and colas were served during pro gressions. High score was won by Mrs. A. B Vick, second high by Mrs. Whit tle and low by Mrs. John MacCor mack of Atlantic. Mrs. F. C. Salis bury won the scrabble prize. The couple, who attended Morehead City high school, are making their home on Evans Street. J. Gaskill McDaniel Addresses Literary-Art Group Wednesday Mr. J. Gaskill McDaniel of New j Bern, writer, humorist and news- ' paper editor, was the speaker at the Literary and Art Department I meeting Wednesday night at the ; I civie center. He was introduced j I by Mrs. Gus Davis, program chair- 1 man. Mr. McDaniel is the originator of j the Yuletide Review, America's! oldest Christmas charity show. It was announced that winners of the district music contest for high school seniors would compete in | the state contest March 19 at Peace j Lanier Book Club Meets At Civic Center Tuesday The Lanier Book club met Tues day evening at the civic center with Mrs. Florrie Arthur acting as hostess. Mrs. C. B. Wade, presi dent, was in charge of the meeting. Mrs. Paul Webb was welcomed back into the club after several months absence. It was announc ed that the next meeting would be Feb. 8 to prevent a conflict with the symphony concert. Mrs. Louis Norris gave the eighth paper in the series on great reli gions, a study of Judaism (Israel). Mrs. Arthur served a sweet drink, apple cake and nuts. Junior Women Kick Off Drive, Name Chairman A film, Reach for Tomorrow, was shown at the Junior Woman's Club meeting Monday night at Rex Res taurant, kicking off the club's an nual Easter seal campaign. The film was shown by Mr. Bert Hawley of Chapel Hill, eastern rep resentative for the North Carolina Society for Crippled Children and Adults. The film explained how Easter seal money is used to bene fit the crippled. Mrs. Champ Lewis, who has been | named seal chairman, announced members of several committees who will work during the cam paign. Mrs. Roy Denkins thanked the members of the Christmas doll committee for helping to make their project a success. On the committee were Mrs. George Lore, Mrs. James Gillikin, Mrs. Harvey Gaskins, Mrs. Charles Freeman, and Mrs. Clark Orrell. Mrs. John Gainey, president, pre sided. She welcomed Mrs. Mack Mason and Mrs. Cecil Adams as guests. Mrs. Gainey thanked Mrs. Hugh Porter for the new yearbooks, which were distributed at the meet ing. Thirty-two members were present. Mrs. O. J. Morrow re ported on Christmas gifts to needy persons. The business meeting was pre ceded by a dutch dinner. A Val entine motif w'as followed with white lace hearts, red hearts and valentine candies. Mrs. Shelby freeman said grace prior to the meal. Mr?. Mary Hartnett, program chairman, reviewed tht highlights oi programs planned for this year. She slid an attendance prize at each meeting will be a new feature. Mrs. Gilmour announced that hot sandwiches will be served to the students of St. Egbert's School each Thursday beginning Feb. 4. The members of the society will cook and serve the lunches. Mrs. John Zittere is chairman of the project It was also announced that the members would serve breakfast for the Holy Name Society Feb. 14 following the 9 o'clock mass. | Father Higgins spoke briefly, ex pressing his appreciation for the work of the members in the past | year. He said he hoped the com ing year would be just as success ful. The meeting was closed with prayer. A delicious dutch dinner was enjoyed. Husband of Native Appointed Mayor's Aide George Green. 36, husband of the former Bertie Willis of Morehead City, took office Jan. 11 as chief aide to John Collins, mayor of Bos ton. Mass. Mr. Green has taken a four-year leave of absence from his job with I the Metropolitan District Commis sion in Boston to accept his new appointment. Mayor Collins, 40, and three of his four children were stricken with polio in 1955 and the mayor has been unable to walk since then. He is confined to a wheel chair. He was elected Nov. 4 by a 24,000 majority that rocked Boston s po litical parties. Mr. Collins was formerly register of probate in Boston. Local Couple Attends Washington Convention Mr. and Mrs. Garland Scruggs j were in Washington, D. C., this week attending a meeting of the ' National Association of Real Estate 1 Boards. Mr. Scruggs is president of the Morehead-Beaufort board of j realtors. Monday morning those attending the convention had breakfast with President Eisenhower in the ball- 1 room of the Hotel Mayflower. Mon day night the North and South Car olina boards entertained congress- : men and senators from the two states at a party at the Statier Hotel. Welcome Son Mr. and Mrs. Michael Delgado welcomed a 6 pound Vi ounce son, Michael Leo. Tuesday, Jan. 26, at Morehead City hospital. They have a daughter, Christine, 2V*. Mrs. Delgado is the former Fran ces Ann Guthrie of this city.
