THE EAGLE Entered at the PostofBce at Burne- ville, N. C., as seci-ad-claas matter, ac jording to act of Congress March 3rd, WJRNSVILLE, N. C. July 29 LYON & LEWIS, Publishers. Agricultural News Notes By S. J. Kirby. THE GIIANGB iS'ortli Carolina farmers and farm women have long since felt the need of a social and frnternaifarTn organi zation. The Alliance and Fanners’ Union at different periods received much backing from the peopiein this State. Enoh served its day, did niu'di good and passed off the stage, leaving the people of this state with very little farm organization. At a recent State Fanners Conven tion in llaleigli several outstanding men and women were appointed on a committee to study farm organiza tions now in exista.nce and to rec ommend what action the people of this state should take in organizing, and as to whether they would go into an already organized order or set up a new orgjuiization. This committee recommended that the Urange, Order of Patrons ofllusban- dry, be invited to establish units in tiiis state in wiiicli farmers, farm women and Ijoys and girls could all have membership. Tlie recointnend- ation was adopted. The Grange is the largest farm oi'gaiiization in America, and the only farm fraternity in the world. It was founded sixty-six years and the organization has been more j)ros|jerous during the last decade n ever before in its long period of life. Jn spite of the prevailing ditioii throughout the country ap- prox/mately dOO new subordinate units have been organized since Oct ober 1, 'I’he Grange covei 0(1 states, reaching all the way froi Miiiue to California, aiid us far north as t\'aBhitigtoii and Minnesota. In November this great organiza.- tion will hold a National meeting in Winston-BHleni, N. C. At this meet ing will gather representatives from each ill the thirty states in which tlier*‘ are Grange organizations, and this will probably be thelargestfiinn gnf.heringeverheld in North Carolina .\UE MITCHELL AND YANCEY I.NTEKKSTEl) IN tlKANOE? A large ninjority of the counties in North Carolina havealreadyor eti Grange units, and have made mucli progress in this work. The farm papers have had much to sa.y ahonl. tlic nature of the work and the benefits to be derived from the Grange. Community leaders in Mittdiell and Yancey counties have at various times expressed an inter est in the organization and some ha ve said that they think it would fir in well here with the local pro gram for agricultural improvement. Jr has been suggested that the Master of Nortli Carolina Grange should he iiiited to come here and address the people in both Mitchell and Yancey on the Grange. W. Kerr Scott, a.n able speaker and one of the leading farmers in the state is Master of the North Carolina Grange. lie has staed his willingness tocome hei'e for two engagements, one in Ihikersville and the other at lluriisville. His coming should give local peop|e an opportunity-to decide whether they wish to organize and to become a part of the largest and one of the oldest farm organizations in America. Tlie county agent will be glad to discuss tliis work with any wlio are interested in deciding what to do about promoting Grange ^work in eillier Yancey or Jlitcliell county at this time. iSlionid we invite Mr, Scott to come here, and if so, when? EXI'EIUMENT STATION FIELD DAY, Tlie annual Field Day at theMomi- tain Brunch lixperiinent Station near Swanmuioa on highway .No. 1.0 will be held this year on August 18. A fi'w farmers from these two coun ties a.tteiuled this meeting lust year. The attendance should be miicli larger this year. Contests in judging livestock and judging legume plants will be held. An opportnity will be given to inspect the field experiment al plats, the dairy herd and the poultry farm. Keep tliis meeting ii mind and plan to go to Swannano: on .\ugust 18. CHEAPER POWER RATES BEING DISCUSSED. Raleigh.—While only one electric power company doing business in North Carolina has voluntarily re duced its rates especially to sma.ll consumers such as home owners and small individual users, the State Corporation Coniiuission is hopeful that other power companies will do likewise a.nd believe that they will, ComiuissionerStaniey Wiubornesakl. The commission has I'eqnested all power companies doing business in the state to submit complete state ments with regard to tlieir rates, earning and investments with a view to making a survey and possibly revisions. “The power companies are co operating witii us to the fullest ex tent and we are getting in these statements every day so that within a few weeks we hope to have all the facts before us,” Winborne said. “One fact is agreed upon—that is that all power companies have more power to sell than they are selling, with the result that it is going to waste and doing no one any good. Our contention is that the compan ies will eventually sell more power and thus make more money than they now are, if they will reduce their rates and thus get greater volume of business. “There is no doubt that many people simply cannot afford to use electricity either for lighting their liome or in business at the rates being charged by some companies a.n(l that they must cither reduce their rates to a point where people (!an uffonl to use it or else go out of business. Our contention is that they hud better reduce their rates and increase their volume rather than go out of business or go bank rupt.” Commissioner Winborne agreed tliat tiiousands of people wlio for merly used electricity in their homes are now retuniiiig to the use of kerosene lamps and that more will do so unless electric rates are brought down to a more reasonable basis, especially for the smaller users of electricity who so far have paid the highest prices for it. Unless the power companies make some real reluc.tioii8 in tiieir rates to user.s, they can expect some drastic legislation, it is agreed here. SALE OF LAND FOR TAXES .(Brought I^orward) Still In Good Shape. Of the more than 12-i,O00,0UO peo ple in this country, over 07,000,()()() liave savings accounts. The average deposit per inhabitant, which in cludes men, women and children, is $227. It we count five persons to a family it means that in the United Stutes as a whole, every family has an average of $1,000 in a saving ac count. These facts are being offered by thrift exponents to show that a nation the United States is a long way from being down and out. It is also offered to show that, no matter how bad tilings may appear to some |)SC)ple, they could be a thousand times worse. It’s a good argument tor optimistic citizens to offer those wlio still insist upon looking on the dark side, and it should also lx‘ of ahie as an example of wliat thrift will do in a country where at least one-half of the population goes in for ngs accounts. Any country with a per capita saving $1,000 to a fam ily is a long way from “going to the ilogs.”—Selected. By producing all bis poultry feed at home with the exception of fish or meat meal, John 0. Smith of (Jay ■ouiity says he is making money selling eggs at 12 cent.s a dozen. (hitawba county farmers are ex pecting to harvest an excellent po tato crop this season.
