BURNSVILLE HIGH SENIOR BANQUET Nu-Wray Hotel Decorated Fittingly For The Gathering One of the most enjovable social affairs of the season was the banquet given by the Seniors of Burnsville on last Saturday night. The banquet was held in the dining room of the Nu- Wray hotel, which was beautifully decorated for the occasion. The central theme, car ried out throuhout the even ing, was the “Senior Dream Ship.” The tables were dec orated with yellow fall flow ers. silver ships, and green and yellow'^ candles. The fav ors also were green and yellow, the class colors. The program was carried out as follows: Blessing — Mr. Tomberlin. Explanation of theme — Miss Mary Lyon. Welcome — Monroe Mc- Curry. Response — Miss June Mc Intosh. Duet — Misses Margaret BURNSVILLE 15 Years Ago November 11, 1921 Mrs. Dover Fouts is visit ing friends and relatives at Bristol, Tenn. Dr. Geo. A. Wheeler is up from Spartanburg to spend a few days and bag a few quail. If you’ve got a dog for sale see Dover Fouts, Bob Ramsey or John Lyon, Jr. No difference what kind of a dog just so it has leg on each corner. What has become of that charter to incorporate the town of Burnsville ? Is it lodged somewhere in the archives in Raleigh. Miss Kate Hyatt has re signed as teacher in the Burnsville public schools— Miss Mabel Gillespie has been elected by the school committee to take her place. J. E. Lyon who has been conneccted with the Bank of Yancey for two years has accepted the position of tel ler with the First National Bank of Marion, N. C., and he will leave next week to begin his new work. Andrew Edw’ards of Bee Hensley and Louise Blake. Toast to Faculty — Lucile Long who has been at Bilt- McLaughlin Child Is Badly Burned The four year old child of Bill McLaughlin of Bakers Creek was badly burned one day last week; about an eighth of the body surface being seared. A two year old child got some matches and the two children got outside the house and while playing with the matches the older child’s dress be came ignited. In connection with it the “week of prayer” was observed. Mrs. D. R. Fouts had charge of the program in the morning, and Mrs. Ho bart Ray had the afternoon program. Dinner was serv ed in the church basement. Officers Elected At the business meeting the election of officers was held. Widenhouse, who has been appointed pastor of the Higgins Memorial church here, and his family, arrived in Burnsville last Wednesday and the entire community joins the Meth odist congregation in wel coming them to Burnsville. Dr. Widenhouse is widely known as a very able pas tor, and Burnsville is for tunate in having him. Both through preparation and years of work in the minis try he is well suited to dis charge his duties here in a most acceptable manner. Born in Cabarrus county, near Concord, Dr. Widen house spent his childhood there. Following his ele mentary school work he spent two years at Mount Pleasant Collegiate Insti tute and two years at Ruth erford College. These two schools, one under the sup ervision of the Lutheran de nomination and the other the Methodist denomination fostered his interest in re ligious training. He was graduated from Henry College, Board Of Education Passes Resolution At a recent meeting of the County Board of Education a resolution was passed rul ing that no teacher would be employed in the county next year who holds only an El ementary A or an Element ary B certificate. This will tend to raise the standards of the schools throughout the county. Also, by giving notice now, the board is giv ing all those who have low certificates an opportunity to raise them if they desire to teach in the county next year. Rev. George K. Neff and Mr. John S. LeFevre went to Marshall Monday to at tend a called meeting of the French Broad Presbytery. A Good Record On Tuesday Jack Gallo way reported that three ’3 Chevrolets had been receiv ed by the Gem City Chevro let Co., and all three had been sold. Carl Banks and Clifford Bailey were pur- purchasers from Yancey county. Mrs. Althea McElroy Has Birthday Party Mrs. Frei Proffitt gpve her mother. Mrs, McElroy has made 'ler home in Burnsville for most of the time for a num ber of year-s, and has a wide circle of friends and rela tives who join in wishing her many more happy birth- lays. Practice Is Begun For Christmas Music Practice was begun Wed nesday night for the Christ mas music to be given at the Baptist church the Sunday before Christmas. There will be no special program, but several numbers vidll be given in connection with the regular service. The boys were accompan ied to Charlotte by Mr. and Mrs. G. D. Wilson, Mr. Sam Huskins and Miss Mary Miller of Bakersville who also broadcast, her selection being a violin solo. The boys won out in a recent amateur night pro gram in connection with the local picture show. Miss Miller was the successful contestant when the ama teur hour was held in Bak ersville. In order to pursue his re ligious studies further Dr. Widenhouse went to New England and spent several years there. He received his Bachelor of Sacred Theol ogy from Boston University, his M. A. from Yale and the degree of Doctor of Philo sophy from Hartford Sem inary. He served t w o churches in Massachusetts —one at Abington and one at ShelL-urn Falls. Wh’le at Shelburn Fall* he married Miss Juanita Gilmore of Salem, Va. Nine years ago Dr. Wid enhouse was transferred to North Carolina. He has served the churches at Ce dar Falls, Black Mountain, Cullowhee and Boone. From Boone he was sent to Burns ville. Dr. and Mrs. Wldenlionse have four children, a boy and three girls. MACK HENSLEY IS HURT AT SAW MILL P.-T.A. Meeting At High School Nov. 17 The regular meeting of the Burnsville P.-T.A. will be held at the high school on Tuesday evening, Nov ember 17 at 7:30 o’clock. Mrs. Z. V. Hall is president of the organization, and Mrs. J. S. LeFevre is secre tary. WOMANS’ CLUB TO MEET ON NOV. 12 The Burnsville Woman’s Club will meet at the home of Mrs. Watson Williams on Thursday afternoon, Nov ember 'l2th. Mrs. W. W. Hennessee will be associate hostess, and Mrs. Fred Pro- fitt will have the program. The subject to be studied is, “Our Flower Gardens.” Mrs. Proffitt is an enthusiastic gardener and the many beautiful flowers she grows each year is evidence of her success along this line. Mack Hensley of Bee Log had his hand severely cut in saw Thursday while at work. One finger was ampu tated, and several others badly mangled. He returned home after being treated by a Burnsville physician. SURVEY MADE OF HISTORICAL SPOTS Miss Mary Belle Delamar of State Historical Commis sion, Raleigh, was in Burns ville Tuesday. At the last session of the legislature ar appropriation was made to place markers at historic spots, and she is making a survey of the Western counties for this purpose. RECEPTION FOR NEW PASTOR On Saturday evening a re ception and pouncting for Dr. Widenhouse and his family was held at the church by the church mem bers. A large group met to extend greetings to the newcomers, and to assure them a hearty welcome to the community. On Sunday evening the members from the Presby terian and Baptist churches attended the service at the Higgins Memorial. Dr. Wid enhouse preached a most in teresting and timely serm on. looking forward to Ar mistice Day. He emphasized the need for peace through out the world.
