Nichols explained that “this
small group, of people” because
entitled to monthly benefit checks
starting January 1040, the first
month that such benefits were
payable under th e Social Security
System.

sary of monthly benefit payments
now celebrated. 1965 wiU also
mark the SC'.'h anniversary of the
Social Security Act, which was
signed by President Franklin D.
Roosevelt in August 1935.

out of two separate trust funds
maintained in the U. S. Treasury.
These funds have been built up with
the social security taxes paid by ]
employees, ther employers and
self-employed persons. “Money 1

vested in interest-bearing securi
ties of the U. S. Government. The
interest thus added to the funds is
enough to pay for the administra
tive costs of the program several

The old-age and survivors insur
ance trust fund totaled $19.7 bill
ion at the end of fiscal year, and

established in January 1957, to

the springtime and shows the house
and gardens at that season.

color, follows a North Carolina
family westward across- the Appa
lachians before the Revolutionary
War. Explains why the early set
tlers mjved west, how they trav
eled, and other concepts underly
ing this movement.
