COURTESY A FORGOTTEN
VIRTUE
BY FATHER ROBERT VALENZA
Now that the holy days of Christ
mas and the Christmas season have
passed, let us consider the truly
human . but forgotten virtues
among men. The virtues so many
of us overlook In our daily lives,
f
but the ones that make life so
worth while.
One of these forgotten virtues
is Courtesy. A courteous man
might be described as a man who
constantly, especially in small
matters, see the true,’ God-given
dignity of each man and hts legiti
mate needs. He not only sees the
dignity and needs of another, but
he responds meaningfully to them.
A couple of examples may be
helpful. At dinner with friends or
acquaintances, a courteous man
doesn’t even notice the morsel of
food that unexpectedly slips from
another’s fork and falls on his lap
or to the floor. Or, again, a gen
tleman is willing to pause a mom
ent in his busy day of work to chat
or to momentarily listen to ano
ther who has a need.
Life can be filled with courteous
thoughts and actions. And then life
truly becomes MORE HUMAN.
Courtesy is like a beautiful smile
on the lips trf a friend, for you
knew underneath that smile is a
deep love for you. Even Jesus ap
preciated the deep love of the Ro
man Centurion, who expressed his
need in courteous thoughts and
words. Luke tells us .in his Gospel

that a certain Roman Centurion,
whose beloved servant was sick,
first politely asked the eldeis of
the Jews to ask Jesus to come and
to cure his servant. This pagan
off cer respected the proper chan
nels of communication within the
Jewish customs and traditions.
Jesus realized hs respect and
thoughtfulness, and the Lord ac
cepted his request. However, the
Roman Centunon knowing that he
was a pagan and according to th<
Jewish Law would defile a Jew

a great respect, J’Lord, I am no
worthy that you should come un
der my roof, say only the Word and
my servant will be healed.’’ (Lk.
7:1-7).
This deep faith and profound re
spect and courtesy touched Jesus
deeply. The Bible tells us Jesus
'‘marveled” at it.
True courtesy moves aU good
people for there is something
pryilNE in it. It is often a forgot-'

Prospects Bright
For Extension
Os Parkway
WASHINGTON Prospects re

Blue Ridge Parfcwav.
Congressman" Roy A. Taylor of-j

when he reintroduced his bill to!
authorize a 186-mile addition froml
Beech Gap in Haywood County to a
point north of Marietta, -Georgia,
The House Interior Committee, i
of which he is a meiriber, must
make the next move.
The project already has tile en
thusiastic support of the Secretair
es. of Interior, Agriculture and
Commerce. Their endorsement fol
lowed recommendations contained
n a report prepared by the Na
tional Park and Forest Service as
the result of legislation sponsored
by Rep. Taylor. >
Committee action is expected
upon receipt of a natiional report
on proposed parkways and seen c
roads now being prepared by a
cabinet-level study group, the Re
creation Advisory Council.
The report is expected by July.
It will recommend new parkways
and scenic roads to meet growing
national needs. The Blue Ridge
Parkway extension will be includ
ed, Taylor said.
The study will touch on general
policies, engineering feasibility,
j construction standards, coordina
tion of the national scenic and in
terstate highway systems, and
methods of financing The Park
way extension will cost around
$72,000,000. These funds wIU likely
be derived from the National Park
Service’s annual sl6 million, road
building budget.
The original 469-mile Parkway
Is completed or under contract,
with the exception of two short
sections: 5.5 miles at Grandfather
j Mountain, where rights-of-way are
unsecured; and six miles between
Oteen and L. S. 25 at Arden. This
section will be let to contract by
June 30th using funds now avail
able at the Bureau of Public Roads
The Parkway from Arden to
Soco Gap has been either complet
ed or let to contract since 1960.
