or germicidal mouthwash is re
cent; before that man gargled
with—and sometimes swallowed—
everything from brandy, port
wine with alum, to salt water
and lemon water.
There are many misconcep
tions about mouthwashes — what
they do and don’t do. Mouthwash
es or gargles can neither prevent
nor cure a cold and they cannot
