Cane River Science Club Jakes Trip By: Judy Phillips, Secretary On Thursday, Oct. 26, the Cane River Science Ciub went on its first scheduled trip. The first stop was at the Bell Telephone Company. During this tour they enjoyed a lecture on the laser, its properties, origin and possible future uses. The group was also taken on a tour of the power room, engineering department and traffic depart ment. The club sponsor, Mrs. Cara Cox, had asked the members to make notes on the trip in order to write a short summary on each place visited. The Bell Telephone Company helped out by distributing pamphlets to the eighteen members making the trip. After touring the Bell Tele phone Company, the Club went next door to the Asheville Citi zen-Times building for a guided tour. They watched the process of printing a newspaper all the way from the collecting and assembling of the news to the rolling of the paper off the press. Although this press could roll papers off at the rate of 40,000 per hour, it is slowed down to run only 10,000 to 12,000 per hour due to the fact that it is im possible to remove the papers from the press when operating at its maximum speed. The per sonnel Os the Citizen-Times also gave members of the Club valu able information to be used in the summary of their trip. While visiting, the newspaper the Club also toured Radio Station WWNC. A highlight of the trip was a visit to the first sound-proof room in North Carolina. The trip was voted a great .success. The students not only learned a lot, but enjoyed them selves immensely. This is only the beginning of a series of trips planned by the Science Club. During the remainder of the school year It is going to visit as many places of educat onal and scientific interest as possi ble. Some of the places they plan to vis : t are the Gerber Company, the University of Tennessee Science Department, and the Sow* Department of Mara Hill College.
