was promoted to Army First
lieutenant in Oakdale, Pa.,
where he is Army Air Defense
Command Post Tactical Direc
tor in Headquarters Battery of
the 18th Artillery Group. His
wife, Ellen, lives at 5 Elwyn,
Carnegie, Pa.
Lt. Gortney entered the
Army in 1965 and was last sta
tioned at Ft. Bliss,Texas. He
holds the Army Commendatbi
Medal.
He is a 1962 graduate of
Cane River High School.

Class John I* Gillespie,son of
Mr. and Ma. C.B. Gillespiecf
Route 2, Burnsville, has re
turned to San Diego aboard the
attack aircraft carrier USS Bon
Homme Richard.
The 43,000-ton warship
completed her record sixth,
and final, Vietnam combat de
ployment when she returned to
her home port November 12
after seven and one half months
in the Western Pacific.
During the 26 yean since
ckmmissioning, Ban Homme
Richard distinguished heaelf
in three major conflicts i Wferrld
War 11, Korea, and Vietnam..
the only Navy attack carrie.'
to claim that record.

Private Blanch Hensley, the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John
L. Hensley, Route 4, Burns -
ville, recently completed 8
weeks of basic training at the
Women's Army Corps Center,
Ft. McClellan, Alabama.
She received instruction in
the Army history and tradition,
administrative procedures, mi
litary justice, first aid, and
field training.
Private Hensley entered the
Women's Army Corps in Au
gust, 1970. She is a 1970
graduate of Cane River H. S,
Army Specialist Four Larry
G. Riddle, son of Mr. and Mis.
Carlo B. Riddle, Route 4,
Burnsville, is driver of the jeep
which recently was selected as
best in the V Corps' 42nd Field
Artillery Group in Germany.
Spec. 4 Riddle's jeep was
chosen for its performance and
overall maintenance record
from among representative ve
hicles of each member unit of
the group.
The 21-year-old soldier,
overseas since February, 1970,
is driver for the commanding
officer of Battery C in the 2nd
Battalion, 92nd Field Artillery
near Giessen.
He entered the Army InFeh,
1969 and was last stationed in
Ft. Bragg, N.C. He is a 1967
