Yancey /Hen Al Workshop School is out now for stu dents in the Yancey County School System, but for many administrators, principals, and teachers, it will be "business as usual" through most of the summer months. Many school officials will be attending an administrator's workshop at Lees Mcßae College in Ban ner Elk in late June. Attend - ing from the Yancey County system will be Landrum Wil son, superintendent; and Boyd C. Deyton, principal, Mica ville Elementary School. In addition, many teach - ers will be attending various institutes and workshops during the summer months. The workshop to be held in Banner Elk is jointly spon sored by tire Northwest Region al Education Center and the Appalachian Teacher Trainirg Complex. From The Editor's Desk ? V - -al »♦ • * L.l y»•r :l v» Many people in Yancey County feel that the action of the Yancey County Board of Education has been inexcusab ly unfair concerning the ap pointment of a Superintendent of Schools for the next two years beginning June 30. The members of the School Board have delayed this crucial ap pointment for more than 10 weeks, completely disregard ing the fact that according to the Public School Laws cf Nath Carolina, School Boards are advised that "At a meeting to be held on the first Monday in April, or as soon as practi cable thereafter, (they) shall meet and elect a county superintendent of schools,.." The rule is uniform through out North Carolina so that the LEGAL NOTICE ~ NORTH CAROLINA YANCEY COUNTY NOTICE The undersigned, having qualified as administrator of the estate of Mrs. Kate H. Boone, deceased, late of Yan cey County, this is to notify all persons having claims against said estate to present them to the undersigned on or before the 3rd day of Decern - her, 1971 or this Notice will be pleaded in bar of their re covery. All persons indebted to said estate will please rrake immediate payment to the un dersigned. This the 28th day of May, 1971. Troy Boone, Administrator of the Estate of Mrs. Kate H. Boone, Route 2, Burnsville, North Carolina 28714. June 3,10,17,24 pd Dean’s List Gary Lester Presnell, Route 2, Burnsville, has been named to the Chancellor's List for the spring semester at the Univer - sity of North Carolina at Char lotte. Mr. Presnell is a junior at UNCC. men who hold these jobs in each school system will have ample time to find other posi tions should their contract not be renewed, or if they wish to change their employment. Va cancies, therefore, are crea ted and filled mostly during April or the early weeks of May and after that time, through out the North Carolina school systems, the jobs of school superintendent have been as signed. The Yancey County School Board apparently does not feel bound by rules that apply to others. They not only failed to select a School Superinten dent on that first Monday in April, they also failed to take action at any School Board meeting since then. And the NUss Mayiand Applications The Jaycees and Jaycettes are making plans and taking applications for the 1971 Miss Mayiand Pageant which will be the 22nd and 23rd of July. Girls between the ages of 18 and 25 who would like to enter can do so by calling or getting in touch with any of the local Jaycettes by June 21; Bunny Mclntosh, 682- 2 9 44; Nancy Holcombe, 682-28 22 or Linda Edge, 682-2477. | Shop here... ] I and save a bundle! 1 yy — I m pa I a 1 2910.001 Comoro 12615.00 | | €|^2579.001 vx- 'SgSSSSS&r Plus Acctiories m N.C. I way the matter now stands, less than two weeks before his con tract is up Landrum Wilson still does not know whether he will be reappointed as Yancey County School Superintendent. The members of the Board of Education will have to make a decision very soon. But no matter what their decision may be at this late date, a grave injustice has been done to Mr. Wilson. A man with a wife and four children to support, Mr. Wilson asked only to be dealt with fairly ly these men who wield such power in this school system-- he surely deserved that much. - ~- r J j* y*Mm, f: ' OP T>» £ WEEX OEPE.R Toatw I fflfk 76 I
