We began at Adrian Simmons farm on the Colberts Creek Road and climbed to the old rail - road grade on Maple Camp Bald (elevation 5800 ft. )From here we had a breath - taking view of the Toe River Valley with Roan Mountain lying in the North. The bald was co vered with ripe blackberries and huckleberries ready forthc picking. After a short break here and a feast on wild berries, we rode on around the old rail road grade towards Camp Alice, our destination for the night. This portion of the trail skir - ted the rugged Rock Creek drainage giving the rider a spectacular view of the sur rounding valley. At some |X>ints there were cliffs dropping for several hundred feet. When wc arrived at Camp Alicq Lee Slagle was already preparing the evening meal. The smell of frying steak ami perked coffee filled the moun tain air. Lee had driven his pick-up in from Mount Mitch ell State Park and had set up his kitchen at the Forest Ser vice Camp shelter. After an evening of good food and the telling of tall tales aroiuid the campfire we settled down for the night. The next morning we left for Buncombe Hoise Range trail via the old railroad grade* There we would lose elevation rapidly to the Soutli Toe Ri/er Road a distance of S miles. Tn is rortion of the trail affoils the rider a splendid view of Mount Mitchell,Cl ingmans Peak and the Blue Ridge Moun tains. The trail winds tluough spruce and fir forest at its high er elevations and than drops down along the North Toe Ri ver drainage tluough hardwood forest. This Horse Frail was con - strutted this past summer with the help of the young boys working under the local Noigli borhood Youth Corp. The trail is about 16 miles long and has some of the most spectacular high mountain views in Eas tern America. At Camp Alice, the mid way point, the Forest Service has a trail shelter, toi let facilities and a spring is near by. From Camp Alice there arc foot trails to Mount Mitchell State Park and Black Mountain Campground. Mount Mitchell is the highest point in Eastern America (e1ev.6684). For anyone interested in rid ing the new horse trail it is suggested you contact our of fice for more detailed trail information. Some portions of the trail need additional work and signing. This could be confusing to parsons not familiar with the area. Our plans are to have the trail ful ly completed by next summer. %> yW" F ■ 'W* 79' V m •; m 'i ‘ KILJ \ W m Members Os Mt.
