Library Week Opens With 'Friends' Tea

the 25th annual National Fi
nals Contests of the Drum
Majorettes of America will
not be held in Spruce Pine
as had been hoped.
The 24th. annual finals were
held at Harris High School,
Spruce Pine, last year, and
David R. Faber of Charlotte,
Executive Director of the
Drum Majorettes of America,
was some months ago invited
by Mayor Albert L. Canipe
to have the organization re
turn to Spruce Pine for the
1972 finals.
However, Mr. Faber re-»
eently announced the selec
tion of Asheville as the site
for this year's event.
In August, 1971, some 1,100
girls, ages four to twenty,
competed for twirling titles
in five age groups during the
week-long event, proceeds of
which went to the Athletic De
partment of Harris High
School.
This year's event. which
is now scheduled to be
V*. on the campus .of tne Uni
versity of North Carolina at
Asheville, Aug. 14-19, will be
sponsored by the Asheville
Flashette Booster Club.
The major croWh to be
won that week will be that
of- “Majorette Queen of A
meriyja," which carries a
$l,lOO scholarship.

currently sponsoring the
presentation at 7:30 p. m. each
Tuesday at the Library the
magnificent series of color
films under the general term,
“Civilization,’’which is causing
quite a lot of appreciative
conversation among the per
sons who are taking advantage
of this important event. The
public is cordially invited to see
any or all of these films without
charge.
The Friends of the Library
has, since the new library
Building was opened to the
public, contributed a total of
$2,100 toward the purchase of
new books, and currently is
seeking further donations to its
New Books Fund. Such
donations are tax deductible.
The Friends of the Library
also gave S3OO to pave the semi
circular drive to the front en
trance of the building from
Walnut Ave.
The stated purpose of the
Friends group is “to encourage
all citizens to make fuller use of
the opportunities now afforded
by the Spruce Pine Public
Library for the dissemination of
education and culture; to
provide a better understanding
in the community of the needs of
the Library; to develop better
citizenship through better
reading Habits; to provide
programs of an education and
cultural nature, to which the
public is invited. All persons or
organizations interested in the
purposes of this organization
are eligible for membership.’’
