Isshin-ryu Karate School is recognized by the Ame r i can- Okinawan Karate Association and by Master Harold Long an Eighth Degree Black Belt. Be - sides the school in Yancey, Wright and Sparks also present ly have a karate school in John son City, Tennessee. Classes are held here on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 to 7 p. m. and 7 to 9 p. m. , and on Saturdays from 12 to 6 p. m. According to Wright and Sparks, they teach three things in their karate schools— kata, kumite and street defense. Katas are a series of pre arranged movements that have a definite sequence. Each move has a meaning and pur pose, ss it trains the student of karate to prepare for defense against one or more opponents with speed and power in the punching, striking, and kick ing techniques. Kumite is karate's free-style sparring. It is a relatively new aspect of karate which trans forms the art from a. dea d1 y weapon to a sport. Street-defense involves me thods which would be used in real situations. Wright said that -because ka rate is something new for this area, that they are inviting everyone to stop by and observe a class. "We will be happy to answer questions anyone may have about karatj and about the Isshin-ryu School.
