Local Karate School G ives

By Jody Higgins
The ancient Japanese art
of karate has long been popu
lar in the United States. Now,
karate lessons are available in
Yancey County.
The Isshin-ryu Karate
School, located on the Mica
ville bypass at Windom, open
ed aim 06 1 a month ago. The
present enrollment is twenty -
four students, including tw o
girls and a 10-year-old boy.
The owners-Instructors De
void Wright of Burnsville and
Ralph Sparks, Jr. of Spruce
Pine are pleased with the inter
est in karate and hope to have
at least 40 students within the
next few weeks.
"In recent years, karate
has come into prominence as
a sport. The average student
learns karate for self-d e f e nse
and physical conditioning, "
said Wright.
"Our school is open to all
who have a desire to learn this

SIMPLE / INTEREST / LOANS /
With PayAnyDay loans, available only at First-Citizens Bank, you pay only
simple interest on the exact amount of money you borrow, and only for the
number of days you borrow the money. PayAnyDay simple interest make
. add-on interest loans" offered by other financial institutions obsolete
PayAnyDay loans are available for financing a car, other major purchases, and
for personal loans.
Choose your own day to pay-any day of the month No late pay penalty
Simple interest simply continues to accrue on the unpaid principal balance until
payment is made.
„ You can save money with a PayAnyDay loan by prepayment, because your
interest is figured each day on only your remaining balance.
If you already have a regular add-on interest loan, it's possible to convert
it to PayAnyDay. Come in and let's discuss it.
Insist on PayAnyDay simple interest financing. Before you buy before
you sign anything, see us or ask your dealer for a PayAnyDay loan.

art. However, we stress the
fact that karate is not learned
in a few lessons or in a few
weeks. Like all sports 'it re
quires time, patience and de
sire, " he added.
Isshin-ryu Karate School is
recognized by the Ame r i can-
Okinawan Karate Association
and by Master Harold Long an
Eighth Degree Black Belt. Be -
sides the school in Yancey,
Wright and Sparks also present
ly have a karate school in John
son City, Tennessee.
Classes are held here on
Tuesdays and Thursdays from
5 to 7 p. m. and 7 to 9 p. m. ,
and on Saturdays from 12 to
6 p. m.
According to Wright and
Sparks, they teach three things
in their karate schools— kata,
kumite and street defense.
Katas are a series of pre
arranged movements that have
a definite sequence. Each
move has a meaning and pur
pose, ss it trains the student of
karate to prepare for defense
against one or more opponents
with speed and power in the
punching, striking, and kick
ing techniques.
Kumite is karate's free-style
sparring. It is a relatively new
aspect of karate which trans
forms the art from a. dea d1 y
weapon to a sport.
Street-defense involves me
thods which would be used in
real situations.
Wright said that -because ka
rate is something new for this
area, that they are inviting
everyone to stop by and observe
a class.
"We will be happy to answer
questions anyone may have
about karatj and about the
Isshin-ryu School. "
