6000-Acre Gift For N.C. Forest The Nantahala National For est has just received, by dona tion, the land for which it was named. The Nantahala Gorge, formerly owned by Mr.. Ffercy B. Ferebee, was accepted by Del W. Thoisen, Forest Supervisor of the National Forests, in May, This block of land, consisting of 5,303 acres, lies within the Cheoah and Wayah Ranger Dis tricts of the Nantahala National FoTest in Graham and Macon Counties, N.C. Thorsen said, "Four and one half miles of beautiful trout waters flow through the Nanta - hala Gorge fa which the Nanta hala National Forest was named. Nantahala is an Indian word meaning "Land of the Noon-day Sun." "The river contains much 'white water' and is widely used by canoe enthusiasts. The tract is also crossed by 11,800 feet of the Appalachian Trail. In 1969 the U.S. Forest Service contac ted Mr. Ferebee asking him to sell them a few acres of land. In return, the National Forests ended up with approximately 6,000 acres being given to them" Continuing his remarks,Thor sen said, "This is one of the most generous gifts of land to the National Forests that it has been my experience to remem ber. This donation reflects Percy Ferebee's foresight in plan ning for the perpetual protec - tion and management of the Nantahala Gorge, and the in tense interest he had in the con servation of our natural raources." "This outstanding tract of land was actually given to the people of the United States to be managed by the U.S. Forest ■S'- VmS . -H , Devoid Wright ETU Graduate Teaches Karate Devoid Wright, 25, son of Mr. and Mis.
