Come early and enjoy hot dogs, sodas, coffee and homemade goodies. 6:30 is the time. The cake walk will start at 7:30. There will be door prizes as well as the cakes. So come and get lucky! Ginny and David Tolliver are visiting with David’s grandfather, GEORGE HAE GER. They are renewing friendships with cousin Joyce Haeger of Miami who is spending the summer with her grandfather. Story book home is alive these days--with GRACE GRASSMUCK bustling round seeing that everything is just so for her granddaughter Patty and hubby, Ron Delan of Coral Gables, Florida. The JOE WARDS have been entertaining Joe’s sister Anne and hubby Ed Cramp of Florida. While here they celebrated their 39th Wed ding Anniversary with dinner at “Beams”. Mrs. Joe Ward has been called to the bedside of her father who is in critical condition. We hope all will go well and you will be back in our midst soon, Kathy. The REV. They went to the lovely Briar Bottom Campground located next to Black Mountain Campground In the South Toe Refuge. The U.S. Forest Service has been very helpful in taking care of their camping facilities. Thirty-two adventuresome boys were in this group, and they learned a very good lesson about setting up camp and about the things it takes to get their camps in proper «i«[n» for their nights sleep. Another camping trip will be taken Friday, July 25, at the same location. All 4-H Action and Adventure kids are urged to get in contact with the teen organizer in their community by Tuesday, July 22, to let him know how many will be going. Yancey Jamboree Judges Selected The eighth annual Yancey Jamboree, a traditional pro gram of folk music, singing, and dancing highlighting Yancey County school stu dents will be staged at East Yancey High School on Thursday and Friday even ings, July 31 and August 1 at 7:00 p.m. Sponsored by the Yancey County Chamber of Com merce, the Jamboree is held in conjunction with the Mt. Mitchell Crafts Fair, which will run in Burnsville for two full days beginning August 1. Entries in the Jamboree are both in exhibition and competition. Grand champion trophies will be given, and there will be awards to winners in folk song/folk ballad, religious, and patriotic songs, and instrumental num bers. Also, winners will be chosen in clogging, smooth square, folk, and buck dan cing. Trophies will be presen ted for the most authentic individual and group folk songs. In addition to the young people, adults will be partici pating in competition for the first time this year. Judging for the event will be done by judges who reside outside Yancey County. The judges will include Mr. and Mrs. Bill Hart bom Arden, Mrs. Dorothy Roberts, and Mrs. Betty Jolley bom Mars Hill. Mr. Hart is with the Asheville Citizen-Times and has judged in other events in western North Carolina. Mrs. Hart, a teacher, has keen interest in young people. Mrs. Roberts and Mrs. Jolley are professors at Mars Hill College. Both Mrs. Roberts and attending a huge ‘‘Wal ly” encampment in Canuua. Welcome home again. The Mildred Ray Circle of Higgins Memorial Church held their annual picnic at the home of ELLA BATCHELLER with NEVA RENALDO as co-hostess on Thursday, July 17. The weather was perfect until about 2 o’clock when the Heavens opened and every one scattered. Twenty five women were in attendance. The JOHN MARSH family are really elated with the transformation of their old cabin. The stonework and decor are outstanding. REV. DAVID DAY and family have arrived from Florida to enjoy a few weeks at their little hideaway. FAYE MUNGER and son James and wife Judi of Miami, and daughter Melinda of DeKalb, 111. and Steve lipkowitz of Orlando, Florida are enjoying their vacation at their cabin in Cattail. The Holden Bolten family are in visiting with Mrs. Bolten’s mother, Mr. and Mrs. DON DOLLE. The Pensacola Home makers are busy quilting their second quilt this season. It will probably be on display at uie fair. A Hope to see you all on Wednesday night. and Mrs. Jolley have judged previously in the Jamboree. Proceeds from the Jam boree are used to help provide a three-hundred dollar scho larship for a senior at each of Yancey’s two high schools. Position At Canterfield Twenty-two year old Phyl lis A. Downing (Paddy) has a position at the Canterfield Horse Center in Chapel Hill, N.C. as Manager and Trainer. Canterfield is the newest, most complete horse facility in the North Carolina Pied mont area, a center for clinics and shows. It has an indoor ring and 6 miles of cross country riding, with top quality show hunters, field hunters, jumpers, dressage horses, Hanovarians, and thorobreds, boarding, train ing and instruction. Paddy graduated from Morven Park International Equestrian Institute at Lees burg, Va. in 1971 and has held several positions since that time. She is the daughter of Captain and Mrs. George A. Hardscrabble--The ladies here are so busy in gardens and canning that they could not spare a day for Wamy. But neither would they give up their "get-together” so they met on Thursday night and tacked one quilt and one-half of another. Green Monntain-This cen ter tacked one quilt and basted one. They made a quilt to sell for an orphan’s home. What a good Christian exam ple! Perhaps other centers would like to try that.
