Army Major Haaker Cadette Scouts Assemble BY BEE YOUNG Cadette GS Reporter Special speaker for the Cadette Girl Scout Troop 65 meeting on September 21 was Major Elsie C. Haaker, U.S. Army Retired. Major Haaker shared her experienced from December, 1941 through 25 years of service for her country. Answering questions as she talked, Major Haaker also showed the girls pictures of Frankfurt, Germany, be fore and after the war. Very obvious to the girls was the pride Major Haaker had in being a woman serving her country. She said she hoped none of us would have to fight in a war, but that we would be proud to be American women at all times. Lisa Shepherd served re freshments at this tneeting. Brenda Allen gave them a very informative tour of the Journal building. Mayland Tech Courses Offered Francis Hulme, professor emeritus from the State University of New York, presently teaching at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa and at Mars Hill College. Mrs. Patti McCall gave graph paper to any girls interested in designing their own needlepoint in prepara tion for the September 28th meeting. At this meeting at the Yancey Library, Mrs. McCall and Mrs. Georgia Cannon will assist the girls in some basic needlepoint de signs. He was the 1976 recipient of the Arnold Young October 1 on the Burnsville Square. Troops are encourag ed to bring Troop Flags with them. Speaking of flags, the Burnsville Woman’s Club has made possible the purchase of a new American flag and other equipment necessary for flag ceremonies for the Cadette Troop. The Burnsville Woman’s Club serves as Troop sponsor for Cadette Troop 65. Another announcement which pertains to all Girl Scouts in the Yancey Neigh borhood is that Girl Scouts are invited to attend, free of charge, the rehearsal of the North Carolina School of Dance, Saturday, October 1, from 2:00-5:00 p.m. at Moun tain Heritage High School. This is in preparation for their Saturday night performance. Cup (Poetry Council of N.C.) for best volume of verse for the year. Also in 1976 he received the Thomas Wolfe Literary Award. Dr. Hulme has served as judge of various creative writing contests (verse and prose) for state and national contests, most recently for the Asheville Arts Journal senior citizen contest.
