Director of Instruction The Yancey County School System is among some of the first school systems in the United States to extensively use the “Insight Unlimited” screening program. This unique program began in 1968 in Muncie, Indiana, on an ex perimental basis. The testing program consists of 56 screens, each taking ap proximately 5 to 10 minutes to administer. The program has been validated for national dissemination by ESEA Title III. The school personnel in volved in the screening program feel that this is the most effective way to screen a large number of children in a short time and also get the results back quickly. The results allow for each child to be taught in a more in dividualized manner accor ding to his/her ability. These test results give the teachers an overall picture of each child’s capabilitjies, needs and strengths. All students in the Kin dergarten and first grade classes in the Yancey County Schools are involved in the screening program which in volves comprehensive screening in motor, visual and auditory processing and language and basic concepts. set up at Burnsville Elemen tary School. Each child is given a folder consisting of his/her name and other vital information. Mrs. Nancy Shaw’s Health Occupation students assist in seeing that each child gets to every station where he or she is screened individually. The screening stations were con structed by Jack Buckner’s and Mike Orr’s Trades and Industries students at Moun tain Heritage High School. The screening program is administered by teachers of Exceptional Children (elementary level). Kin dergarten and first grade teachers, physical therapist, school psychologist, nurses from the Health Department, elementary schools’ media coordinator, attendance coun selor, speech pathologist, ESEA staff, teacher aides at Burnsville School and Health Occupation students.
