Library Director At Workshop A-M-Y Regional Library Director, Theresa Blanken ship, attended a “How To Get Corporate Grants” workshop on February 1 in Atlanta, Georgia. This one-day seminar, designed for executives who wish to in crease their support from local and national cor porations, was structured to show how to identify the best prospects, contact corporate decision makers, how to find ail the facts about cor porations, and how to write persuasive proposals. Conducted by the Public Management Institute of San Francisco, California and the University of Detroit, the seminar featured Michale McDevitt, author of How To Find Corporate Funds and Executive Director of Par tners, Inc. Mrs. Blankenship’s seminar attendance was made possible by a Library Services Con struction Act (LSCA) Con tinuing Education Grant through the North Carolina State Library. Grassroots Program Aids Arts The Toe River Arts Council is now seeking applications from groups for Grassroots Arts Program Funds, to be used for arts projects anytime from July 1, 1982, to June 30, 1983. TRAC is the Local Distributing Agent for these funds, which are allotted to each county by the North Carolina legislature on a per capita basis. The funds are in tended to generate new arts activity in the community. Organized groups of a non profit nature may apply for funds. Some examples of uses Grassroots money might have would be for festivals, parades, performances, classes or e^bits. In general, the funds may be used for programming and operating expenses but not for full-time personnel or for capital ex penditures. Applicants should be prepared to show matching funds from their own budgets. A committee of local citizens will decide on the proposals. TRAC board mem ber Ronnie Deyton is chair man of that committee. Call the TRAC office at 682- 7215 about the Grassroots Arts Program. Applications must be in by February 17. Vocalist, Mellnik To Perform Mr. David Mellnik, Visiting Artist at McDowell Technical College, will perform a com bination of classical, religious and contemporary music on Thursday, February 4, at 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary of the United Methodist Church in Spruce Pine. His wife, Elizabeth, will accompany him on the piano. A North Carolina native and the son of a minister of music, David began singing in a choir before he was ten. The love of music took him to the Univer sity of North Carolina at Greensboro where he studied music performance, specializing as a vocalist. His first paid employment was as a singing dishwasher at the Farm House Restaurant in Blowing Rock, N.C. Since then he has worked at dinner theatres in West Palm Beach and appeared in a number of operas including Falstaff, Carmen, Pagliacci, Gianni Schicchi, and Amal and the Night Visitors. A former winner of the state and regional National Association of Teachers of Singing Annual Auditions, David twice has been a regional finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Audition and twice has been the state winner of the National Federation of Music Clubs National Audition. The program, sponsored by Mayland Technical College, is open to the public. The per formance will be cancelled in case of inclement weather. MITM Sponsors Performance By ETSU Jazz Singers Here The Phil Donohue Show, the Miss ETSU Pageant, and now Mitchell High. Since their creation in 1979 the ETSU Jazz Singers have been in constan tly Increasing demand to provide entertainment for civic clubs, social functions, and schools throughout East Tennessee. Now they will travel to North Carolina to perform for the public at Mit chell High on Saturday, February 6, at 8:00 p.m. Spon sored by Music in the Moun tains, the performance at Mit chell will include Broadway show tunes, 1930’s-40’s jazz and cuirent popular songs, all entertainment that will appeal to varying ages. The East Tennessee State University Jazz Singers is a group of twelve carefully auditioned singers accom panied by a four-piece rhythm section and seven instrumen talists. The group combines choreographed show choir numbers with vocal jazz selec tions. Such familiar titles as “It Had to be You,” “I Don’t Want to Set the World on Fire,” and “I Only Have Eyes for You,” are part of their repertoire. The Jazz Singers are all students at E.T.S.U. in- Film Show They didn’t quit. Evangelist Lester Roloff won the victory to keep the Christian home for girls open through prayer and trusting God. A special feature of Satur day evening will be a pre concert Covered Dish Supper for the performers and the public at 6:30. A reduced ticket price is offered for those who attend the supper and bring a dish for eight. The supper will be held in the school cafeteria.
