North Carolina *..
a glass of beer
means many things
Like ham and eggs, apple pie and cheese, a
glass of beer and relaxing comfort go hand
in hand. And to all but a minority of North
Carolinians this simple pleasure is
accepted as such.
But a glass of beer means much more than
personal enjoyment. It means more than
8 million dollars in state taxes annually ?
with those counties and municipalities
permitting its "legal sale" deriving the
greatest benefits.

Young Adult Study Group
In Brasstown Does Things
by James Caldwell
The Young Adult StudyCroup
of Brasstown is on the march!
Their activities are many and
varied exemplifying their fine
attitude of self-development
and community improvement!
On Thursday, November 9,
they had as their guests some
of the Senior Citizens of the
Brasstown Community. Presi
dent, Charles Caldwell
introduced each of them,
expressed appreciation for
what their lives had meant to
the community and gave each
a chance to express an
opinion on what he or she
thought had caused Brasstown
to be what it is today. . . and
what each considered an op
portunity for this generation.
A very challenging dis
cussion followed the brief
statements of these Senior
Citizens , and plans were made
for follow-up meetings to be
held periodically Inthefuture.
Refreshments were served
by the Young Adults assisted
by Mrs. Cecil Tipton, who
presided at the coffee tahle.
Those participating were:
Mr. and Mrs. FredO.Scroggs
Mr. Bill Clayton, Mr. J. O.
Penland, Mrs. Da sy Myers,
Mrs. Iowa Green, Mrs.Lillian
Caldwell, Misses n Doris
Clayton, Alice andAlmaCook,
Messers Charles and James
Caldwell, Billy Tipton, Mrs.
Theta Barnard, and Mrs
Velma Beam Moore.
On Tuesday, November 14,
this group of Young Adults
sponsored a meeting for the
purpose of hearing an inter
pretation of "The Hammer
Report" ? The Economy of
Western North Carolina. This
interpretation was ablely
presented by Mr. Tom Day,
cashier Hayesville branch of
The Citizens Bank and Trust
Company.
Mr. Day congratulated this
forward thinking group on
their ambition to study,
discuss and then do something
about their economic
situation. He stressed the
necessity for discussion
groups, communities working
together, and above all action!
"Study without action is fruit
less -- yet action without
study is often a waste of time
and energy," commented Mr.
Day.
During the discussion
period there were many
questions raised, suggestions
made and several courses of
action indicated.
Those attending this meet
ing were Mrs. W. H. Gist,
Lissi Plambeck. Mr.andMrs.
Billy Tipton, Charles and
James Caldwell, Alice and
Alma Cook. Doris Clayton,

Garland of the N. C. E xtension ?
Service. Their particular in
terest at this meeting was
Ornamental Gourds for sale.
Mr. Garlandgrows ornametal'
gourds as a hobby, and has
learned much about the care
and culture of them both by
study and experience.
"Almost every family wants
at least eight or ten of the
Ornamental Gourds to use in
fall and winter decorations,
so you can s urely get a market
for all you can grow," said
Mr. Garland.
The group had many
questions concerning the grow
ing of this crop as a special
enterprise. Mr. Garland
suggested that small
community groups study their
situation, try to find several
different th ngs they can grow
and put on the market. "So
often we overlook our richest
opportunities, right inourown
gardens!" said he.
Those present were Misses
