It la about one tenth the aire of the sun and requires 12 of our yaari to make one revolution at la orbit. la average distance from the sun la 483 million miles. I Hence It receives 30 tones leaa heat and light from the sun than that received by the earth. Ita surface temperature la very low ? 210 degrees Fahrenheit below zero. Jigrtter outshines any other planet excc..t the earth'a twin sister. Venus. At this wrltov Venus is lost In the light of the sun. In a few days It will appear in the west Just after ??Mt and will be the moat brilliant object In the sky except the sun and moon. Most people do not know that Mercury and Venue go through phases like our moon. That is because they are Inslcfc of the earth's orbit. All other plan.,,, are outside the earth'a orbit and ao do not go through these changes of surface ap pearance. Using a power of 50 on a moderate sized telescope the disc of J letter will appear about the same sire as the full moon to the unaided eye It la known to have 12 moons four of which maybe seen with a power of 10. These four larger satelites were first seen by Galileo with his * optlck tube" in the year 1610. In the telescope they form, beautiful picture and change from night to night. All four cannot be seen every nlghtdue ? the fact that they are con stantly moving and thus-one or two may be hlden behind me planet or passing in front of it. _n me latter case mere is an eclipse of the sun taking place; and if you have suf ficient power you will aee a dark, round spon the me face of me planet. MICHAEL LOUIS POWELL the foraer Mis* Marcia Dale Thunaen Wa,?a,. -AnnouncaJ Hayesville -- Miss Mania Dale Thurman daughter of Mrs. Josephine Thurman of Hayesville and Mr. Dale Thur man of Long Beach, New York became the bride of Michael Louis Powell son of Mrs. Rebecca Powell and the late Ffancis Wiley Powell In a ceremony held December 22 at 2:00 p.m. In the Hayesville First Methodist Church. The Rev. H. C. Young Jr. of Kernersvllle, N. C. and the Rev. Ralph Jacks pastor of ficiated. Miss Sue Halgler was organist. The bride was given in marriage by her Grandfather, Mark Weaver. She wore a street length white brocade sheath and carried a nosegay of white chrysanthemums and lilies of the valley. Her head dress was a white mink clip with a short veil. Miss Betsy Brads haw was that Jigiiter's disc is not cir cular, but distinctly oval. It has an equatorial bulge of 6000 miles. That is. Its equatorial diameter If 6000 miles greater than its polar diameter. Our earth has only a 19 mile bulge at the equater. Any rotating sphere has a tendency to widen at its equator due to the centrifugal force generated by Its rotation. This huge planet rotates on Its axis in 9 hours and 50 minutes - the short est day in the solar system. Any given point on the equator of J loiter is routing toward the east at 28,000 miles per hour. Its surface gravity is 2.66 times that of the earth, a 100 pound objecton the earth If transferred to Jupiter would weight 266 pounds. At the poles of Jupiter that weight would be about 20% less. It would be quite a job to keep ig> with the calendar on Jupiter. Its year is twelve times as long as ours and its day only ten hours long. Therefore a year there would have 10,500 days and 200 days in a week. If there were clocks there I ke ours the Yninute hands would run about half as fast as our second hands. But it Is un likely that there are any clocks there or any people. Hence there Is no need for a time system on Jupiter.
