Closer Together Vary ofon. trouble draws ? community closer together. This happened In Murphy over the weekend. Everyone who helped deserves a 'thank you*; from the res cue Mam ? the ladtes who provided sandwiches and catfee. To list everyone who offered assistance would be impos sible. ? Just this word B let all know that this did not go unnoticed. A Small Bill Murphy U In danger at kiting ? vitally Important service, the American Red Cross Blood Program. There's a simple reason. As of the last of July, the local chapter had paid none of Its pro rata share oward the Blood Program for fiscal '62-"63. Ifs a small bill; Just >348. There's a simple reason why this bill has not beee paid. The local chairman resigned a year ago. The Blood Program resigned some time law. As far as we can lean, no one has been ^>pola?d or elec?d to fill these offices. The answer Is simple *>o. A local meeting shotAd he called. These offices should be filled. Enough money should he raised to at least pay this small bill. The value of the Red Cross Blood Program is apparent. We must have It ?> provide adequate blood here during any emergency. Your life may depend on It. One other thing. The Murphy Red Cross Chapter Is still of ficially liswd sa the Cherokee County Chapter. Andrew* has Its own chapter and blood program. This has caused much confusion In the peat, both at home and In the headquarters of Red CrosS. Why not change It to Murphy Red Cross Chapter? Time To Act Very often, it takes a tragedy, or near tragedy, fc> bring home a message. This Is the case In Cherokee County this week. The County Sheriff's Department Is rendered Inadequate fay the lack of fall -time, paid deputies, and lack of two-way radio communication. There Is a difference this time, however, because this In adequacy In the Sheriff's Department has been discussed be fore. But nothing has been done id correct it. The sory i? already familiar. The county Sheriff's De partment once had paid deputies and radio communication. A locally Intrtxhiced bill in the Legislature several years ago took the deputies in this coimty off salary. A change of County Commissioners removed the redlos. In the following Leglslsdve session, the lawmakers turned the problem of whether or not to hire paid deputies back the County Commissioners. ?Home Bill' rule was passed, which allows fee commis sioners to hire deputies if they think Its necessary. Whether or not two-way radios are necessary is also left tf> to the commissioners . The obvloue reason these two Items have been left out is the fact that they cost money. Cherokee County is already heavily indebted, cfcie id school construction and other necessary items in the budget. Taxes are higher than ever this year. But the old adage that "you k?t just what you pay for" still holds true. The Sheriff and the deputiea who have worked have done a good Job. But more help is needed. The county needs full-time, psld deputies, and adequate radio communications. Taxpayers should let their Commissioner know how they feel sbout this question. It is worthy of much thought, snd serious discussion. Circle M??t?
