Rotary Fellowships Open To Local College Grads Applications for fellowship grants totaling $400,000 to be awarded by Rotary Internatio nal, world-wide association of Rotary clubs, are now being accepted by local Rotary clubs it was announced by Virgil O'Dell. president of Murphy Rotary Club, and Todd Reece, President of And rews Rotary Club. Called Rotary Foundation Fellowships, they average ap proximately $3,000 each and are for one year of graduate study abroad. The awards for which applications may now be made are for the 1965-66 aca demic year. The deadline for applying is April 15. Students of this community interested in learning more about the Rotary Fellowships as a preliminary step in ap plying for an award s ho old contact one of the club presi dents. The amount of each award is calculated to cover round trip transportation, registra tion and tuition fees, educa tional supplies, room and board, and a limited allow ance for travel within the country of study. Rotary Foundation Fel lowships are available to un married men, aged 20 to 28, inclusive, who hold a college degree or will hold one by the time the Fellowship is to be- j gin. Applicants must be able to read, write, and speak the language of the country in which they will study. A special type of Rotary Fellowship, termed an Addi tional Rotary Fellowship, is u. s. Government plot of land within the downtown busi ness district containing a minimum area of 25,600 sq. ft. with minimum front age of 160 ft. on public street. Applicants sponsored by the local club will be considered along with other candidates* from this Rotary district. In some cases, a Rotary club is eligible to sponsor two ap plicants for a regular Fel lowship and two for the special kind. Winners of Rotary Foundat ion Fellowships are regarded as ambassadors of good will to the countries in which 'hey study, and through their as sociation with Rotary Clubs abroad they have wider op portunities to meet people and become better acquainted with their way of life and their in stitutions. Begun in 1947, the Rotary F oundation Fellowship pro gram has awarded more than 1,850 Fellowships to stu dents in TO countries. Total grams have been in excess of $4,800.00. The purpose of the Fellow ship program is the advance ment of understanding and friendly relations between the people of difierent nations. Berkshire Vs. Rimco Basketball Game To Aid Baseball Progran ANDREWS - A basketball game between the employees of Berkshire International Corp. here and Rimco Manu - factoring Co. of Murphy will be held Saturday night, Jan. 26 in the Andrews High Gym to raise money for the Andrews Little League Baseball Pro gram and the town baseball team. A girls game will begin at 7:00 p.m., followed by a boys game. Proceeds will be split between the Little Lea gue and the town baseball team. Mrs. Jackson Honored At Household Shower ANDREWS - Mrs. Bryant Jackson was honored on Sat urday evening at 7:30 p.m. with a household shower giv en in the basement of the St. Andrews Lutheran Church. Hostesses were Miss Betty Sue Best, Mrs. Oleta Truett, Mrs. Pauline Jones, and Mrs. Anita Luther. A green and yellow color scheme was carried out in the refreshments. Fifteen guests attended. He was a native of Swain County, a son of Mrs. Zena Grant Stiles of Andrews who survives, and the late W. R. Stiles. He was a retired farm er. Surviving in addition to the mother are the widow, Mrs. Mary McCelland Stiles; five daughters, Mrs. Grace Ful ford of Andrews. Shelly and Dorcas Am of the home, Mrs. Clyde Cantrell of Cramerton, and Miss June Stiles of Gas tonia; three sons, Johnny, Billy and Ray of the home; three sisters, Mrs. Aston Truett of Andrews, Mrs. Fred Kitchens of Belmont and Mrs. Dolph Jones of Marlon; six brothers, Andy, Hardy, Phil and Glenn of Andrews, Roy of Gastonla and Walter of Cra merton; and six grand children. SOLESBEE MURPHY ? John Gaston Soles bee, 88, died Sunday night, Jan. 18 at the home of a da ughter, Mrs. Frankie Bur gess in Fayettevllle. Mr. Solesbee was a native of Cherokee County, a son of the late John W. and Martha Abernathy Soleabee. He was a member of Hanging Dog Bap tist Church. Surviving in addition to Mr a. Burgess are another daughter, Mrs. Evelyn Mills, and two sons, Cleve and Kyle Soles bee, all of Detroit; a sister, Mrs. Nina O'Dell of Murphy, Rt. 3, and a brother, William Soles bee of Andrews; and thirteen grandchildren.
