3heCWoman 's 3?age _ m , m MLtAUS HATTIE PALMER SOCIETY EDITOR PHONE $37-2385 Lenten Devotions Begin At St. Williams MURPHY - On Ash Wed nesday, the first day of Lent, St- William Catholic Church, held the opening devotion In ? series of Lax en Devotions. Ashes made from burst palm branches were blessed and distributed to all who at tended, with the reminder to "remember man that you are dust and to dust you shall return." In the remaining weeks of Lent these Lenten Services will be held on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. The special Lenten Services are to consist of a Scripture Vigil Service made up of Bible readings, the explan ation of the passages read, and congregational hymn sing ing. Then there will follow the blessing of some material thing which has a spiritual meaning for the observance of Lent and the preparation for the feast of Easter. Examples of these objects are water, oil, and bread. After prayer together by the whole community, all will join in offering the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Everyone is cordially in vited to attend these Friday evening Lenten Services at St. William Catholic Church. Mrs. Glenn Bates Entertains At Canasta Party MURPHT-Mrs. Glenn Bates entertained with two tables of Canasta at her home on Friday night. The home was decorated throughout In the Valentine motif. Refreshments also were In keeping with the occasion. Attractive prizes to High and Low score were given. Mr. and Mrs. Jake Johnson attended the funeral of their grandmother held In Belmont on Monday. -M Miss Carolyn Bates and Dan Whitmlre of Atlanta were guests Sunday of Miss Bates' parents, Mr. and Mrs. Creed Bates. -M Major and Mrs. Kenneth West of Augusta, Ga., spent the weekend here with Mrs. West's mother, Mrs. Nora Ford. Miss Hamby Engaged To David Donald Fletcher : HAMPTON. VA. - Mr. and Mrs. Wtllard Hamby of Hamp ton, Va., announce the engage ment of their daughter, Miss Nancy Emmy ion HambytoMr. David Donald Fletcher, son of Mr. and Mrs. Archibald Flet cher of New London, Conn. Miss Hamby was graduated from Hampton High School and is employed as a secretary with United States Continental Army Command, Fort Mon roe. She also is the grand daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wal ter Sneed of Murphy. Her mother was the former Miss Dorothy Sneed. Mr. Fletcher was graduated from New London High School, and is serving a tour of duty with the U. S. Air Force. He is stationed at Langley Air 1 Force Base. I Free Methodist Youth Win On Quiz Program MURPHY - The Rev. and Mrs. Glenn B. Rhodes of Free Methodist Church and Miss Eunice Shields, Youth Di rector, accompanied 13 young people of the Church to Gai nesville, Ga., on Saturday, Feb. 8, to attend the Youth Rally held there. Those from the church here who was on the Bible Quiz pro gram were Janet Elliott, Peggy Cook and Linda Rog ers. They won over the Way nesville and Atlanta young people on the Bible Quiz pro gram. Community Development Meet Set At Martin's Creek A Community Development meeting is set for Monday, Feb. 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the Martin's Creek School. It will be a community wide mee ting and everyone is cordia lly invited.
