His column appear! In over a hundred papers and he has had several books publish ed. In other words the stuff he writes Is heavy artillery, mine Is about .22 caliber. His name is Earl Tucker and his -column Is "Rambling Roses and Flying Bricks. A few weeks ago he men tioned me in his column. You can imagine how that pleased me. Here's what he said: "There is a fellow who lives in Murphy, N. C. I don't know where that is, but it wouldn't do any good, because he lives on Route 4. His name is Harry Bagley, and he writes a real good column, but he sure has got a lot to learn. He wrote me a letter the other day and told me a good coon story he was going to use. What he has got to learn is not to ever tell another columnist what he's going to write about. One will steal from his own sweet mother, if she writes a column, and the hard part about it is that he'll never give her credit. There is a fellow in Murphy who claims to be die best coon hunter in a six-county area. He owns a fine pack of 'coon hounds and if there's a coon anywhere around, you can bet your bottom dollar his dogs will tree him. What is so amazing about this hunter is that he understands his dogs so well and is so familiar with the woods, that the minute a dog barks, hell tell the other hunters to get started. He is so good that lots of times he beats the dogs to the tree where the coon is. Several times, his friends say, he even beat the coon to die tree." Well, after this appeared in Earl's column I wrote him and told him I reckoned as how he was right about my having a lot to learn, but that I must be ketch ing on already on ac count of I used that 'coon story in my column BEFORE I sent it to him. Now I hope you noticed that I said his name was Earl Tucker of Thomas ville, Ala. That's pretty important and has a lot of bearing on the rest of this story. I addressed my letter to him like so: Mr. Earl Thomas -- -Tucker ville, Ala. I knew this might be klnda confusing to the postal people on account of there ain't no such place as Tuckers ville, Ala. And there might be 2 or 3 dozen Earl Thomases in that state. So, 1 took my letters to Joe Ray, Postmaster here in Murphy, and explained every thing to him. He took Earl's letter, postmarked it, and then he put it in a larger envelope I'd addressed to the Post master at Thomasville, Ala. In the big envelope I had writ ten a note to the P. M. ex plaining what 1 wanted to do and that the enclosed letter addressed to Earl Thomas, Tuckerville, Ala., was actually for Earl Tucker and would he please put it in with his mail. I also asked him not to say anything to Earl about it and use the self-addressed post card to let me know if everything went off all right. In a few days I got this card back from Mr. Byrd Goodman saying he had delivered my letter as requested. He went on to say that Earl was a good friend of his, what a fine fel low he was, he saw him every day, and things like that. So far so good. Now all I could do was wait and see. I realized that It was possible Earl might just open that letter and pay no attention to how It was addressed. I sure hoped that wouldn't happen. I thought he might say some thing in his column, perhaps, about how efficient and all die Post Office folks were, how quick the letter reached him addressed like it was, and no telling what else. His next few columns didn't mention the matter and I had about decided he hadn't even noticed the durn thing and that my brilliant plan had gone down the drain. But yester day I got an Air Mail letter from him. I had written him about our having had so much snow iq> here and since I knew they didn't get but very little In Thomasville, Ala. I was send ing him some that I had de hydrated. Told him I was pretty sure he could figure out a way to re-convert It to It's original white fluffy state. Here s what he said about that. "Thanks for the dehy drated snow. I had no trouble at all converting It back to snow, but you sent me too much, as you will note from the enclosed picture. (He sent me a snapshot of a house, with car In front, and trees and everything covered with snow.) What I did was to mix It with GL-70 and 3 Ana cln tablets. Works fine, send some more each time you write, but cut down on the volumn." I've already written apolo gising for sending too much, it, indeed I had, and it sure looked like I had judging from BACKWARD GLANCE 40 YEARS AGO MARCH 21. 1924 Arthur Barnett and Miis Nettle Queen, both at Marble were teuetfly married at the office ef T. But I told him I was pretty sure that instead of my having sent too much that he probably added too much GL-70 cause the 2 Ana cln tablets sounded about right for the amount of dehydrated snow I had sent him. Along toward the end of his letter he invited me to come see him. Said he had a spare bedroom, 2 clean sheets, and everything I'd need. I'm going, too, but I don't know whether I oughta tell him about this shenanni gan I pulled about that letter. In a kind of a P. S. here's what he said about it, "By die way, I got your letter ad dressed to Earl Thomas, Tucker ville, only 2 days after it was postmarked!"
