I have just had mine blistered. f
Occasionally I get a few let- (
ers from folks who read this
ness and that la what happen
ed a few weeks back after my
olumn about the telephone.
Most of those letters were
roni youngsters, tt my
nemory serves me correctly
[ am pretty sure I cautioned
rou grown folks a long time
igo about letting your chill un
read such stuff as this. But
I see now you didn't pay any
mention to me. I hope after
this you will listen at me when
I give you such good advice.
In the story that stirred up
ill the youngans I had given a
Mr. Marconi credit for In
venting the telephone and 1
let Robert Fulton invent the
cotton gin. Well, all the let
ters were in agreement about
my not knowing what 1 was
talking about. They claim that
a fellow named Bell did the
phone and somebody like Whit
ney figured out the cottc.. gin.
Then they all told me what
Marconi and Fulton invented.
I won't say what these young
ans told me they invented on
account of I haven't had time
to do any research on 'em and
I see now that I had better
make sure about things like
that.
Now there were some very
good letters among those I
received. One I especially lik
ed began "Dear Mr. Cuz." It
was from a sweet little girl
in the fifth grade and she was
very lenient on me. Not once
did she accuse me of being a
dumb cluck.
But all the letters definitely
were not from sweet little
girls in the fifth grade. Some
of them were from mean and
ornery little boys. And I
wonder if some of them didn't
have help from Mama or Papa
while they were composing
their letters and telling
me how stupid I am.
One of them asked how I
ever managed to get so ig
norant. All I can say is, it
sure wasn't easy. And it has
taken me a lot of years along
with a lot of hard work to
get where I am in it.
I would venture to say that
my ignorance covers a wider
variety of subjects than any
Ph. D.'s knowledge does. That
ought to af ord me quitea dis
tinction right there. I might
also add that I am a self
made ignoramus which is pro
bably a lot more than many
of these letter writers can say
for themselves.
However, in spite of all this
disrespect shown me in these
letters there was an encourag
ing note in them, too.
It was the fact that our
youngans are beginning to
learn a little something and
that speaks well for our edu
cational system. Every onece
in a while I get kinda uneasy
about that matter.
Most of the time I don't
worry too much about things
like that. I used to, though, a
right smart. Then 1 decided
that all my worrying wasn't
helping these situations a bit.
They usually all get worked
out without benefit of my sage
counsel.
However, when It begins to
get close to election time I
can't resist reading a lot about
the different candidates. That
is when 1 get worried all over
again on account of all the
things getting pointed out that
are in such terrible shape.
For instance, I was thinking
we had pretty good raods.that
is, until right here lately. Now
I have found out that we just
don't hardly have any fit to
drive a wagon over. And our
schools. Seems like everyone
of them is about to fall down
all over the whole state. I'm
pretty sure they will, too, un
less one or the other of these
fellows gets elected. After thai
everythlng'll be all right for
several more years.
Then 1 read where somebody
had misused some state funds.
Now this is about the low down
est thing a man in public off ic?
can possibly do besides ped
dling influence. But I'm glac
to say that this doesn't hap
pen but about once every four
years ? close to electior
time. I reckon that's ofter
enough.
What I have always won
dered about Is how it happen
that the Incumbents are al
ways the crooks and those run
ning for the offices they holt
are the good guys ? ac
cording to the fellows doing
all the running. 1*11 bet yoi
have noticed that, too.
Wouldn't it be something
If a candidate was to brag oi
his opponent and tell us hov
good and honest a man he was'
And how efficient a Job he ha<
been doing or would do?
Then he could urge every
one to vote for his opponent en
account of he had such sterl
lng character and everything
I'll bet you anything the vor
ers would be so shocked an
surprised at such a campalgi
they would probably all go n
the polls on election day an
elect this guy with all tha

other good qualities. Then oi
the other hand. . .Well, any
