It is impossible for me to attend, which fact, I great ly regret. Many sincere thanks for the invitation, and I would fain at tend were circumstances and condi tions favorable. Most respectfully, John T. Jo.xts. ? ? My dear Mb Noryki.u I I an) much obliged for ycmr kind 1 invitation to attend the celebration at the completion of the W. N. C. K. it, to Murphy, and wifch it were possible fur me to be present with yottr people so that I might axsure Utetu that the felicitation over this ij WJ ill nrUat exreSC, isn?t confined tutWMrbrt in common to kH the people of N. C. We have at last, after many year* of toil and struggle, border the State with lines of travel and transportation, io that from Cur rituck to Cherokee, there is swift and easy communication. You are no longer wedged iu between tieorgia and Tennessee; but from your ex treme border you have a graund highway to Ashevillc and to Ualeigh. Your friends in the east may now see for themselves Jtlke. rich and fer tile vallcv's of piutuc^ '??<K auJ'finc TUrmg, file AHiuiiuin'iiiiil rlfeiV, tlie mineral wealth just about to be de veloped and the thousand advan tages which make the county of Cherokee one of the richest and most desirable of all the counties in the State. I trust and believe, that the com pletion of this road may prove of the very highest good to the whole State, and may bind the more close ly together the best people in the world, the people of North Carolina. I hope you and yours are well and doing well. 1 would like to bear from you sometime as to how you aie getting along, and how the coun try prospers and our friends are. Your friend, J. C. McUak. ? ? Mkrkrk. R. L. Hkrbert and oth er*, Committee on Invitation, Mur phy, N. C. . ffentr. ? I received thi? morning your invitation to meet with the citi sens of Murphy, and Cherokee coun ty "North Carolina on the 23rd inst., M jiarticipate in celebrating the com pletion of the Western North Caro lina Railroad to Murphy. A busi nets engagement to meet parties here o* that day, which I cannot ihiw alter, prevent! my acceptance of your invitation. In Cehalf of the Chamber of Com merce of the City, I congratulate Murphy, and the strong arms and stout hearts of those who have fought "the world the flesh and the devil" for her reali cation of this step in the future. "Go West and grow up with the country" is tapidly beaming. "Go South and grow up with the country." ~Ea?t and West lines" are ao longer the only paying linee. The last ten years have shown the largest united growth on "North and Sonth lines.'' Southward "the Star of Empire" points the way. Experience teaches that fev "Ea?* and West linee" pay, unless they are fed in by feeding to "North and South linns." Now,' that your Kite to Savannah and Norfolk is completed, your next line it the Murphy and Chattanooga Use. ? I hope Chattanooga may have the opportunity before many years have named, to unite the good people of Murphy and Cherokee county, to join with ns to celebrate the opening and the completion of the Murphy and Chattanooga Railroad. Thanking you for the kind invita tion to be with you on 24rd inst. Your? trnly, Tomlinsox Kokt. ? ? Messrs. R. L. IIkriikrt, F. P. Axi.ky, J. \V. C'oopKK, R. A. Akin *xi? Hkn Posky, C'omhiittee on In vitation. Oeritlemen: ? I cannot adequately express the deep regiet I feel, that many circumstances beyond my con trol, will prevent accepting your in ivii.Miuu h* present with the good people ol Cherokee county on the 23rd instant, to celebrate the com ylrtiw ottW Wj)?ni lina Railroad; but though compelled to be absent, 1 will, in spirit unite with them in their rejoicings of this great enterprise which for nearly a- half century the^ have been ear neatly looking and lmb6ring, for with alternate hope and disappointment; and I do this, the more cordially, be cause it was my good fortune in the past to make this one of the special objects of my legislative labor*. Most hastily do I congratulate you and them onjthis happy oocaston, aud most sincerely do I believe it to be the beginning of a new epoch iu the history of your County. lilessea as your section in witn so many natural advantage*, an<l en riih?d by such a variety o? mineral, and other wealth, there is every rea son to hope that the completion of this Itailroad, which brings your people in closer and more intimate commercial and social relations with the State, and business sections of the country, will be the means of making it one of the desirable, both for homes aiu! business investments in our rabidly growing South laud. We people, therefore, have much cause for rejoicing over this most au spicious event. - Jlut I cannot ri<l ni> w:lf ?>? tTit ttfouglit ? and I trust I may be par doned for alluding to it ? that iu the 'great joy of the day there will be, I know, sincere and heartfelt regret, that he, who was the chief projector of this great enterprise ? at the time apparently impracticable ? of build ing a railroad through the mountains of Western North Carolina, and who with *uch persistent eeal, continued his efforts in behalf of his section and people in the face of discouragements that would cause the stoutest I warts to quail ? that's he, though living, is prevented by his sad affliction from joining with his beloved people in celebrating the commemoration of his life-work. I need not say that I refer to Col. William H. Thomas ? no' should proper tribute be with held from others who were his co laborer's and success's >a this great work. The lamented Hayes, of your own County, Bryson, of Swain and Robinson, of Macon, and others, all of whom so earnestly labor in behaff of this Kail road. It it befitting, that the celebration of the laying of tbe Corner Stone of the magnificent court house, which 700 are to erect in Murphy, should be the crowning act of this memora ble occasion. For while the one bo tokens the administration of justice in the courts of the County, tbe oth er evidences tbe realization of that justice to which the Western people have been so many years entitled, and for which they have so particu larly waited. Again assuring you and the people of my inexpressible regret at not being able to be present and partici pate with them in their rejoifcingn, and renewing my warmest congratu lations on the completion of the Western North Carolina Railroad. I am with sentiments ot highest es teem. . Very truly yours, ThOS. D. JoUNSTOSf. Alliance Speaking County Lect'r, W. G. W. We clip the following from the Constitution of 29th: Will the Marrietta and North Georgia railroad be bottled up this aide of Knoxville? It js rumored in railroad circles that matters between that road and the East Tennessee are not satisfact ory, and unless sorflething is done the road will not be permitted to cross the Tennessee river. At present* the road goes into Knoxville over the Marysville branch of the East Tennessee. If the con sent of the East Tennessee is with drawn, there will be nothing left for the Mah-ietta and North Georgia rail road to do but to build its own bridge ?cross the Tennessee or stay out of Knoxville. The road being in the hands of a receiver in no way conld the neces sary bridge and track be )>uilt except by issuing receiver's certificates. A call was made yesterday on Judge Henry B. Tompkius, to ascertain the truth of the rumor, but it was found that he was out of the city, having gone to Knoxville. Judge Tompkins represents the bondholders, and it is presumed that he iftiiow in Knoxville for the pur pose of seeing if existing differences cannot be adjusted. ' To the Cituens of Murphy Thirty years ago I gave to the town of Munphy a street twenty feet wide along the brow of the hill inter secting Hiwassee street where the calaboose now stands. According to propositions made to me by some 4>f the railroad officials that they would open said street, I gave them street thirty feet wide. I I reliably informed that some of the business men in Murphy objected to the wdrk agreed upon, becaase they ooeld go to and from the depot with out pasaing through the public sqaare. If this charge ia false, pleaae go to work and open up the street accord ing to ooc tract. M. Fai*. . Railroad accident five miles south of Bine Ridge.
