History. . .
Walter McCombs Mauney was
born In Cherokee County in the
year 1902. He graduated from the
University of North Carolina in
1924, at die age of 22. He came
back to Murphy, and went to work
at Parker Drug Store. While there
he married Elizabeth Ford, in Nov
ember 1926. He worked at Parker's
for eight years and then purchas
ed The Mauney Drug Company in
May, 1930.
He was in business six months
when the Murphy Bank closed. He
took in seventeen dollars the day
the bank closed and had loaned
all the money he had in his pock
et to friends. After hurdling this
hardship his business thrived, as
the TV A moved into Murphy and he
worked from 6 a.m. until 10 or 11
o'clock at night.
Mr. Mauney has been active in
politics for years, has served on
Town Board of Murphy, Cherokee
County school board. County Health
board. He has been a member
of the Cherokee Masonic Lodge,
and was a key member of the Mur
phy Lions Club for years.
He served as Chairman for the
five surrounding counties, in the
first polio drive Murphy ever had.
It was when President Roosevelt
waa first elected President. Mrs.
Mauney helped him and they drove
to Copper hill, Tennessee, Young
Harris, Georgia and Robbinsville
and Franklin, North Carolina, sell
ing tickets for the ball which cli
maxed the drive. It was held at
the Regal Hotel on President Roose
velt's birthday and was called the
President's Ball. For years foll
owing die first drive, Mr. Mauney
waa chairman for the Polio drive
In this county.
|j The Mauney*s have three child
ren, Mrs. Jean Greene of Jack
sonville, Florida, Harry of Mur
phy and Walter Ford Mauney,M.D.
who is serving in the Armed For
ces, Honolulu, Hawaii.
Mr. Mauney was active in his
store until 1961 when a heart att
ack forced him to remain at home.
Duke Whitley who has been with Mr.
Mauney for years then took over
and ran the store with Mr. Mauney 's
guidance until 1964, when Mr. Mau
ney's son, Harry, who had operated
a drug store at Hayesvllle, took
over the management.
Harry is married to Betty Puck
en of Farmington, Missouri. They
have one daughter, Nancy, who is
in the eighth grade at Murphy School.
Harry attended Baylor Military Aca
demy prior to attending the Univ
ersity of North Carolina, where he
graduated from Pharmacy School.
Mr. Mauney's employees, who
have been with him for a number
of years, speak highly for him as
an employer. Mr. Whitley has been
with Mr. Mauney so long that many
> people call him Mr. Mauney and
some think he owns the store. He
is married to Edna Patton and they
have two daughters, Jane, who is
a senior at Murphy, and Lynn, who
is a senior at the University of
> North Carolina.
t Lois Mallonee worked for Mr.
Mauney when she was in high
school and has worked regular for
four years, and now she has a boy
i who is a senior in high school.
Nancy Decker and Harley Kin
i caid have both been employed by
Mr. Mauney for ten years and Ha
zel Carringer has worked for five
years. Doris Pack has recently
begun working.
All of these employees will put
in a good word for Walter McCotnbs
Mauney anytime they get a chance,
as they all know of the many good
things he has done for people, with
out ever asking for repayment. They
have also found working under Har
ry Mauney that he has a lot of the
fine traits of his father.
