Has Supplied Their Customers With Fine Service History. . . Walter McCombs Mauney was born In Cherokee County in the year 1902. He graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1924, at die age of 22. He came back to Murphy, and went to work at Parker Drug Store. While there he married Elizabeth Ford, in Nov ember 1926. He worked at Parker's for eight years and then purchas ed The Mauney Drug Company in May, 1930. He was in business six months when the Murphy Bank closed. He took in seventeen dollars the day the bank closed and had loaned all the money he had in his pock et to friends. After hurdling this hardship his business thrived, as the TV A moved into Murphy and he worked from 6 a.m. until 10 or 11 o'clock at night. Mr. Mauney has been active in politics for years, has served on Town Board of Murphy, Cherokee County school board. County Health board. He has been a member of the Cherokee Masonic Lodge, and was a key member of the Mur phy Lions Club for years. He served as Chairman for the five surrounding counties, in the first polio drive Murphy ever had. It was when President Roosevelt waa first elected President. Mrs. Mauney helped him and they drove to Copper hill, Tennessee, Young Harris, Georgia and Robbinsville and Franklin, North Carolina, sell ing tickets for the ball which cli maxed the drive. It was held at the Regal Hotel on President Roose velt's birthday and was called the President's Ball. For years foll owing die first drive, Mr. Mauney waa chairman for the Polio drive In this county. |j The Mauney*s have three child ren, Mrs. Jean Greene of Jack sonville, Florida, Harry of Mur phy and Walter Ford Mauney,M.D. who is serving in the Armed For ces, Honolulu, Hawaii. Mr. Mauney was active in his store until 1961 when a heart att ack forced him to remain at home. Duke Whitley who has been with Mr. Mauney for years then took over and ran the store with Mr. Mauney 's guidance until 1964, when Mr. Mau ney's son, Harry, who had operated a drug store at Hayesvllle, took over the management. Harry is married to Betty Puck en of Farmington, Missouri. They have one daughter, Nancy, who is in the eighth grade at Murphy School. Harry attended Baylor Military Aca demy prior to attending the Univ ersity of North Carolina, where he graduated from Pharmacy School. Mr. Mauney's employees, who have been with him for a number of years, speak highly for him as an employer. Mr. Whitley has been with Mr. Mauney so long that many > people call him Mr. Mauney and some think he owns the store. He is married to Edna Patton and they have two daughters, Jane, who is a senior at Murphy, and Lynn, who is a senior at the University of > North Carolina. t Lois Mallonee worked for Mr. Mauney when she was in high school and has worked regular for four years, and now she has a boy i who is a senior in high school. Nancy Decker and Harley Kin i caid have both been employed by Mr. Mauney for ten years and Ha zel Carringer has worked for five years. Doris Pack has recently begun working. All of these employees will put in a good word for Walter McCotnbs Mauney anytime they get a chance, as they all know of the many good things he has done for people, with out ever asking for repayment.
