DIGNITY and REVERENCE through the Years Murphy Funeral Home Robbinsville Funeral Home W. D. Townson's Funeral Home Fleet of Vehicles W. D. Townson first opened a furniture store in Murphy in 1919 and from this business developed both the Townson Funeral Home and the Townson Lumber Company. In his furniture business he started the manufacturing of caskets and boxes for funeral use. Soon he was asked to direct funerals, and an embalmer was added to his staff. At the death of the late C.B. Hill , well known Murphy Funeral Director, Mr. Town son purchased his ambulance and other funeral equipment to meet the needs of his growing business. A new building was constructed for the Townson Funeral Home and it was seperated from the other businesses. This was the first exclusive funeral home to operate in this area. To provide funds for the people to meet the cost of the funeral expenses during the depression of the "30", the first burial association in this area, the Western Carolina Mutual Burial Association was formed, and to this day continues to serve thousands of people. To further serve the people, the funeral home now has contracts with three insurance companies. Allied Security Insurance Company, Consolidated Life Insurance Company and the Gateway Life Insurance Company, with which the funeral home can place the insurance programs of the people they Serve. In 1957 the Townson Funeral Home in Robbinsville was opened to serve the people of Graham County. Both funeral homes operate twenty four hour ambulance service, both have airconditioned chapels and are completely staffed with licensed personnel.
