THE CHIROKO SCOUT and ClAY COUNTY PROGRESS Volume 76 - Number 19 December S. 196412 Pfefe* ThU WeekP?kll W~klr - Uc?4 Clee* f *33 ? Murphy 'Rambling Jn Clay' By Mrs. Neal R. Kitchens Now is the time to cut down on fuel bills by putting pits tic oyer the windows. Why we wait until the reel winter set a In, I don't know but here in the Sheriffs Off Ice we waited until the blue snow started blowing, Monday. For the past two years we have used plastic and put it up on the inside sealing It with masking tape. It takes a little cardboard strip to hold it but the mask ing tape makes the windows almost air tight. This will cut the fuel bills by at least one third. ? ?? ? ? Was glad to hear from Glo ver Ledford, a former Clay Countain saying he still reads the Scout and Progress. Among those stopping by to give subscriptions for Christmas gifts were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Swanson of the Tusquittee section. They sent it to his parents, now living in Lowell. Carl Moses also called wanting to send his son the paper while he is in service overseas. Mr. Moses says that when you are away from home you read every word of the local paper even the adver tising, for you are so anxious to know about things back here. Miss Lillith Lidseen en - couraged me recently when she said she enjoyed 'ramb ling In Clay." For those who find it hard to give an appro priate Christmas gift, you might try sending the local paper. One day this summer a man and his little son came in to pay tax. The gentleman owned a truck and some per* sonal items, but no land. The tax was $9.94. When he handed me a $10.00 bill he said, "You know me and this little feller picked enough black berries to pay the tax." I gave him the receipt and with pride he put it in his pock* et and told the little son he could now go to the drugstore and get an ice cream. With that, they left the office and the little one readied 19 ? borry stained hand to clasp his dad's. A smile spread over his face. I had the feeling that an ice cream was no every day affair with this boy. When I reach the golden years and have time to sit and rock, it's with memories such as this that 1 shall reflect.
