Good Summer Management Can Boost Beef Returns Special attention to summer management practices can make a favorable situation even bet ter for North Carolina beef Cat tle producers. Enjoying high prices cur rently and looking forward to a continued strong market into the fall feeder auction season, producers are looking for ways to take full advantage of the market situation. Fall feeder calf prices may be the highest since 1951 when the average was $36.88 per hundred pounds. A new record could be set for yearling steers. Extension animal husbandry specialists at North Carolina State University are offering the following suggestions for sum mer management: 1. Creep feed calves equal parts by measure of shelled corn and whole oats until mark et time. Feeder calves are a good way to market grain when cattle prices are high. 2. Rotate pastures to help con trol internal parasites. If need ed, treat calves for worms dur ing July. 3. Control flies during the summer months. 4. The hreeding season should be over by now and all bulls removed from the cow herds. 5. Check all calves to see that they are properly dehorned and castrated. v 6, Give all cattle free choice to loose salt, a mineral mixture and dean water. 7. Cull cows should be sold in July and August 6. If calf crop was off this year, it would be a good prac ticed© pregnancy check the en tire cow herd and market any cows that are not lured. 9. Plans for renovating old may be in order to im 1 quality of next year’s Plan to market feeder and yearling steers ■ through the state graded sales in the fall. It is important that pro ducers consign cattle to the grad ed sales to provide a dependa ble supply of good quality feed er cattle for buyers who have supported the sales over the years. 1968 Lenoir County Social Security Benefits Announced Jerry T. The messages were reduced to l/200th of their origi nal size by a new information technology process de veloped by the Sprague Electric Company Semicon ductor Division, Worcester, Mass. By etching the micro-messages in an ultra-thin, 4 millionths of an inch, quartz (silicon dioxide) coating on the silicon wafer, a record able to withstand the extreme conditions of space will remain permanently on the moon to signify the historic event.
