Arts Council announces
grant deadline
The Arts Council of Winston-
Salem and Forsyth County is
accepting applications for its
matching grant program Project
Assistance. Nonprofit cultural
organizations, who provide high
quality programs and services to
Forsyth County residents, are eli
gible for up to $4,000 in match
ing grant funds. The deadline is

Duke Endowment funds
physician assistants
The Charlotte-based Duke
Endowment has awarded a grant
of $64,500 to Southeastern
Regional Medical Center in
Lumberton for a training program
for physician assistants. The pro
gram will recruit, educate and
place physician assistants into
primary care practices in
Robeson and surrounding coun
ties. Students will study sciences
for a year at Duke and then
return to a clinical site in or near
Robeson county. The endowment
expects to spend $464,550 over
three years on the program.
Microsoft chairman
will give away billions
Bill Gates, chairman of computer
giant Microsoft, says he will give
away 95 percent of his nearly $8
billion fortune when he reaches
his 50s. Gates, now 38, says he
will give the money to "charitable
things, scientific things" but
warns, "Don't tell people to write
me letters, it's a lot to give away
and it's going to take time."

multiple sclerosis victims

Chapter of the National Multiple
Sclerosis Society has announced
its 6th annual bike tour. Bikers -
both professional and casual -
are invited to participate in the
two day, 1 50-mile event that
begins Septernber 24 in
Greenville and loops around
Camp Sea Gull on Minnesott

Doris Duke's will
questioned by adviser
A former adviser to late tobacco
heiress Doris Duke has filed
objections to her $1.2 billion
will, claiming she may have been
murdered. Irwin Bloom was
removed as co-executor and
trustee of Duke's will in 1992 for
unspecific reasons. Duke left $5
million to her butler, Bernard
Lafferty and named him trustee of
a foundation that will control her
estate. Bloom's claims that Duke
may have been poisoned were
rejected by lawyers for Lafferty.
K Mart to raise funds
for special Olympics
K Mart is raising money for North
Carolina Special Olympics
through a statewide raffle in its
stores. Norwegian Cruise Lines
has donated to K Mart tickets tor
a seven-day cruise to Bermuda to
raffle. Last year, K Mart raised
nearly $45,000 tor Special
Olympics games for people with
mental retardation.

Golf classic slated
at Cary country club
The Autism Foundation of North
Carolina will host its third annual
charity Golf Classic on Aug. 22
at the Prestonwood Country Club
in Cary. Rufus L. Edmisten,
Secretary of State; James
Goodnight, president of SAS
Institute; and Sen. Kenneth C. •
Royall Jr., senior budget advisor
to the governor, are honorary
chairmen.
Last year's tournament raised
more than $ 18,000 tor children
and adults with autism.
