November 1996 Philanthropy Journal of North Carolina 17 People and Organizations ARTS ANR CUITURE Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux joins the North Carolina Dance Theatre of Charlotte as its new Artistic Director. Also joining the company's staff is Bonnefoux's wife, Patricia McBride, who shares title of Co-Associate Artistic Director with Jerri Kumery. Mark Diamond is Dance Theatre's new Director of Education. Robert E. Bush, Jr., Presidents CEO of United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County, Inc. named to gov erning board of Americans for the Arts, a new national organization creat ed from the reorganization and merging of National Assembly of Local Arts Agencies and American Council of Arts, which is dedicated to advancing arts and culture. Bush will also serve on Americans for the Arts national pol icy board. Richard L. Early named President and Executive Director of Charlotte Symphony Orchestra. Jim Hoffman named Public Relations and Marketing Specialist for Discovery Place and the Nature Museum, Charlotte, effective September 5. Lenoir C. (Lee) Keesler, Jr., Charlotte Market President for First Union National Bank of North Carolina, named Chairman of 1997 Arts & Science Council - Charlotte/Mecklenburg, Inc. Annual Fund Drive which kicks off January 21, 1997 and runs through February 27, 1997. PlayMakers Repertory Company in Chapel Hill named Emmy and Golden Globe Award winning-actress Rosemary Harris as this year's PlayMaker Award honoree. Spirit Square Center for Arts and Education President and CEO, Joseph Golden, has resigned his position at Charlotte center effective December 31. RilSINESS First Counsel, Inc. announced that four additional partners have^joined the staff: David Johnston, Joseph lannoli, Lynn Kandel, and Bill Glance. First Counsel has been retained to conduct a $2 million equity campaign for Cliffwood, Inc. of Fayetteville. Robert J. Simonds has become chairman of First Counsel's Group North Operations and John A. Gimmler, president of FCI's Group West Operations and Executive Committee member. The Herald Sun, daily newspaper of Durham, received 1996 Business in the Arts Award presented by Business Committee for the Arts, Inc. and Forbes Magazine, both of New York, NY. The Herald Sun created Special Publications Division to develop publications that promote local arts organizations. The company has provided the arts with more than $1.5 million in asistance and cash grants since 1991. Whitney Jones, Inc. named to American Association of Fund- Raising Counsel, America's oldest organization dedicated to advancing cause of philanthropy while ensuring ethical approaches to fund-raising. CQMMiiNITT The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Housing Partnership has been rec ognized by U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in achieve ments in helping more families become homeowners in the Genesis Park area of Charlotte. Gary E. Costley, dean and profes sor of management at Babcock Graduate School of Management at Wake Forest University, elected chair of board of trustees of Youth for Understanding International Exchange, a non-profit organization which pro motes international understanding and world peace with programs for high school students in more than 40 coun tries. Joshua Else of Winston-Salem named development officer at Wake Forest University School of Law and Melissa N. Combes of Greensboro named director of develop ment and alumni relations for Babcock Graduate School of Management. Dr. John Hope Franklin, noted historian and scholar, received presti gious Anna J. Cooper Award at St. Augustine's College's first annual Celebration of Scholarship Day. Melinda French Gates of Medina, WA has been elected to Duke University's Board of Trustees. Gates received her bachelor's degree from Duke in 1986 and her MBA from Fuqua School of Business in 1987. She is mar ried to Microsoft founder, chairman and CEO Bill Gates. George Glisan named first Alex Lee Professor at Lenoir-Rhyne College. Created through an endow ment by The George Foundation of Hickory, the endowed chair was given to bring to campus a seasoned manage ment professional who would also act as a resource to business community and provide limited advisory services to area small businesses. Willard A. Gourley Jr., long-time supporter of UNC Charlotte and member of Friends of UNC Charlotte for over ten years, has been named 1996 recipient of McMahon Appreciation Award by Foundation for The Carolinas. Terrance D. Greene of Savannah, GA and Kyle S. Harrison of Atlanta, GA, both of whom attend North Carolina A&T University, were two of twenty-three students chosen to attend Coopers & Lybrand's sixth annual Scholars Program's Leadership Seminar, one component of the Scholars Program, on July 22-23 in New York City. Bernard J. Hyman, formerly Community Development Specialist at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Social Work Human Services Research/Design Lab, has accepted position of Associate Director, Community Social Work Program at University's School of Social Work. Harold Q. Langenderfer, profes sor of accounting at UNC-Chapel Hill Kenan-Flagler Business School, recently received second annual Accounting Exemplar Award from American Accounting Association's Public Interest Section for his contributions to profes sionalism and ethics in accounting edu cation. Rebecca K. Malenkos, high school English teacher in Carmel, and Grace Elizabeth Hancock, first-grade teach er in Raleigh, were named 1996 recipi ents of $20,000 Marcellus Waddill Excellence in Teaching Awards by Wake Forest University. Meredith College has announced several administrative appointments: Amy Avery, assistant director of Career Center; Anna Taylor, publications manager for Office of College Communications; and Alma Lee, director of college's Teaching Fellows program. Grace Respass, technology teacher at Frank Porter Graham Elementary School in Chapel Hill, received a $25,000 Milken Educator Award from the Milken Family Foundation.
