! COLORFUL PARADE
Wednesday afternoon the little
folks of the grade school marched
in gay and colorful parade through
the streets of Black Mountain.
Suddenly and without warning,
* the streets were invaded by a host
iof stygian apparitions, skipping
and dancing in Satanic glee.
Marching in columns of two, the
grotesquely garbed little represen
[ tatives of Halloween passed in fan
j tastic array. Red, black and yel
low costumes flashed in the bright
; afternoon sun. Stretching in seem
ingly unending line, the entire
family of gobblins passed in fiend
ish merriment. Pixies in red
jackets and green tunies, and
showing no age, pironetted in
sprightly dance, acting very pret
! tily indeed.
Imps in ghoulish masquerade
and in evil wood, scorched the good
j house wife’s evening -meal, and
; tripped the aged pedestrians as
they made their homeward way.
Gnomes in mischevious spirit
1 lingered in the evening shadows,
. hiding the cows in the mountains
long past the milking tine. In con
. ventional garb, hobbled the dread
• ed old witch in black cloak and
pointed hat, leering and casting
her evil spell upon the standers
by.
Ghosts silent and deathly pale,
j glided listlessly along looking
neither to left or right.
This placid little mountain town
was held under the magic spell
long after the invading spirits had
faded into the distant hills.
It is said by some that on all
Halloween eve friendish laughter
can be heard, and witches with
black cats, astride a broom fly
ing over the country side, are seen
silhouetted against the moon.
There is some question about
this being really true, but many
bits of unanchored furniture and
etc. showed up in unaccustomed
places. Since no one could be
found who admitted seeing the
phenomena taking place, it at least
borders upon the supernatural.
The writer having been duly im
pressed by the colorful pageant,
was also impressed by the perfect
order maintained by the pretty
i teachers w-ho accompanied the pa
-1 rade.
Farmers in the Cape Fear Basin
j experienced serious feed losses in
recnt floods, says Hazl Meacham
I of State College.
RED CROSS NEWS
A class of Home Nursing for the
colored people began on October
15. Eighteen members registered,
including on man. The class meets
on Monday and Friday nights from
7 to 9:30. The instructor is Mrs.
Weston Gardner, a registered
nurse.
Mrs. N. L. Perins, the chairman
of Home Nursing, stated that all
the members of the new class are
full of interest and enthusiasm.
They secured their own hall in the
Craigmont section in which to
hold these meeting^.
More Home Nursing classes are
in the making—one at Ridgecrest
and the High School students have
requested one.
A class in Black Mountain re
cently completed the course, and
the members received certificates.
The members were as follows:
Mrs. Carl Moore, Mrs. William R.
Chapin, Jr., Miss Louise Mease,
Miss Dorothy J. Williams, Mrs.
Walter H. Styles, Mrs. George W.
Stone, Miss Elsie V. Kerlee, Miss
Edith L. Drake.
Some members had to drop out
because of illness or other reasons,
so in the near future another class
will be held.
It has been requested that any
registered nurse in this section who
could teach a class please contact
Mrs. Carr in the City Hall.
INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER
CO. PLANS TO MAKE FARMING:
EASIER AND PROFITABLE
By making mechanized farming;
possible on a small scale, Interna
tional Harvester company plans to
make living easier and farming
more profitable for 2,200,000 of the
nation’s farm families.
The plan calls for mass produc
tion of a new lightweight tractor
and supplementary farm tools,
priced within reach of two-thirds
of the farms with acreage up to
40 acres.
Mechanization of these farms,
the manufacturer asserts, will not
only raise living standards but
will make it possible for more peo
ple to hold jobs in industry and
still realize the dream of cultivat
ing a few acres. It should aid the
smaller farm to compete writh lar
ger ones. Promotion of soil conser
vation is also seen as a benefit.
