B. HAIRR U._ & *'— —-—* Several McDowell County farm ers, including Robert McNair of Old Fort, R. 1, J. W. Greenlee of Marion, R. 3, and J. E. Baker of Nebo, R. 1, planted sericea lespe deza on their farms this spring to be used as a perennial hay crop. These fanners planted from 25 to 30 pounds of scarified sericea seed per acre, lime and phosphate materials were used when neces sary to assure a good stand- Sericea lespedeza being a per ennial crop, it does not make much growth the first year. The sec ond year it begins growth early and is ready to cut for hay when it is from 12 to 14 inches high, and will yield high quality hay. B. T. Nichols of Old Fort has. seeded three acres of new pas ture back of his store this spring. Mr. Nichols applied lime and fertilizer prior to seeding a mix ture of grasses and legumes on a well prepared bed. Woods Huskins of Marion R. 3, recently planted 2,000 kudzu crowns on the bank below the riding ring on I. D. Blumenthal’s farm. “In its practical application, soil conservation means adapting farming to the soil.” 18-Month-Old Son of Mr. and Mrs. B. R. Lewis Dies 0 William Eugene Lewis, 18- month-old son of Mr. and Mrs. B. R. Lewis of Old Fort, died in an Asheville hospital Saturday morning following an illness of one week. Funeral services were held Sun day afternoon at 4 o’clock at Eb enezer Methodist Church, near Old Fort. The Rev. Mr. Stevens officiated. In addition to the parents, he is survived by two brothers, Donald Ray and Robert Wayne Lewis; his paternal grandparents, Mr and Mrs. P. W. Lewis, and the ma ternal grandmother, Mrs. E. A. Kelly, all of Old Fort. Wiseman—Good 0 Miss Genia Wiseman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Wiseman of Ashford, became the bride of Marion Good, son of Mr. and Mrs. Y. J. Good of route 3, Marion, Saturday evening, April 13, at 6 o’clock at the Baptist parsonage with Rev. M. O. Owens, Jr., pastor of the First Baptist Church, of ficiating. The bride wore a black gabar dine suit and topper with white ac cessories and a corsage of white orchids. Mr. and Mrs. Good are both graduates of North Cove high school. Mr. Good entered the U. S. navy in 1943, receiving his honorable discharge in March of this year. The couple are making their home in Ashford. On Martha’s Vineyard off the Massachusetts coast there is a rapidly dwindling colony of the almost extinct heath hen. Alvin Gilliam of the U. S. Navy has returned to the service after spending a ten day furlough at home with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Garland Gilliam of Crooked Creek, McDowell County. The bride-elect is a graduate of the Pleasant Gardens high school. The bridegroom is a graduate of North Cove high school. After graduation he entered the service of the U. S- army, and held the rank of sergeant at the time of his recent discharge.
