The Atom Bomb has jarred us into realizing that civi lization can not endure unless the spiritual power of men and wo men is increased. The only power that is greater than atomic power is spiritual power. AH of us have idly watched commercial recreation sap the very foundations of our life in America. The people who offer recreation in our cities offer it in order to make money on it. Most of the purveyors of recreation are unscrupulous as to the deteriorating effects of this recreation. Honky-tonks, juke joints questionable movies, roadhouses; all kinds of tawdry recreation is offered the young people of America for the sole purpose of making money. The Lord’s acre department, un der the leadership of Dumont Clark, is planning to offer a new service to the rural churches. It will offer assistance in the field of recreation under church and Sunday school auspices. Fortunately, commercial recrea tion has not yet invaded our rural districts to any large, extent; and the field is open for the churches to seize this opportunity and take over this field If a rural church could have a swimming pool, and a softball field, and a few tennis courts, it could offer recreation to the young people in the com munity under Christian auspices that would develope and strengthen Christian character. It could arrange hikes, picnics, weiner roasts, softball tournaments, tennis tournaments; and in this way, recreation would aid in build strong. Christian character, There is a wonderful opportunity ahead for the country church and Sunday school. The worst people in our cities organize to offer the lowest form of recreation to our young people in order to make money out of it. It is time for the church people to organize to offer the finest kind of recreation to the young people in our country districts. Strong, fearless, gracious, Chris tian character is the one thing that will lead the world out of its troubles today. The rural church can take a long step forward in developing this type of character in the young people of the country if it will seize this opportunity to offer recreation to the young people in the countryside under the best auspices. READ ALL ADS THE BLACK MOUNTAIN NEWS LETTER RECEIVED THIS WEEK BY NEWS There has come to my delight ed attention certain articles ap pearing in your paper by Mrs. Thomas S. Sharp. These show such keen apprecia tion of nature’s mysteries, and such admirable scholarship in the interpretation of astronomy, Botany, Folk-lore and other sub jects of universal interest, that my enjoyment of these wonders in our universe has been measur ably increased. May I commend these articles of Mrs. Sharp to all those reading your excellent paper, and may I express grateful thanks that we still have learned (as well as ta lented) writers, who devote their lore and learning to subjects far removed from coal strikes and other near-disasters of our Post- War world.
