Peoples, Raleigh, was found guilty of violating the Un employment Compensation Law by filing claims and receiving bene fits of unemployment compensa tion for 12 weeks while fully em ployed, and was sentenced to 12 months on the roads by Judge Paul Smith in City Court last week. . Peoples was found guilty of filing claims and drawing $lB-50 I a week for 12 weeks while drawing $35 to $37.50 a week for work in a groceriteria. David G. Ball, UCC claims deputy, brought the charge and his evidence was corroborated by the groceriteria operator. Judge Smith’s sentence requires road work for two months, the re maining ten months’ sentence be ing suspended on condition that Peoples reimburse the UCC for the $203.50 unlawfully received, and remain on probation for five years. VETERANS GET EXAMINATIONS FOR DIPLOMAS Veterans wishing to take exami nations for high school diplomas in the newly established veterans’ testing center at the court house in Asheville may do so every Sat urday until further notice, accord ing to Dr. C. D. Killian, professor of phychology and education at Western Carolina Teachers college, Cullowhee, who is supervising the test there. The examinations have been of fered on the last two Fridays and Saturdays and originally were giv en each Monday. Eleven students took the tests Friday and more than 100 have taken them since their inception there in May. A majority of those taking the examinations, offered through the armed forces institute, have pas sed, Dr. Killian said. “Nearly all” of those with recent, schooling handed in passing examinations, he said.
