Plain iced coffee, shown at left, is tops if you pour fresh hot coffee over the ice cubes. Brew it double-strength by using twice the usual amount of coffee or half the usual amount of water. Also excellent ia home-made cof fee soda. Make a syrup by blend in* IV4 cups cooled black coffee with % cup light corn syrup. Add H cup light cream. Mix well and pour into 4 tall glasses. Add coffee and cream. Coo over hot water, stirring constantly un til mixture thickens and coats the apoon Cool. Sprinkle gelatine on cold watei Combine corn syrup and sugar. Heat ti boiling point. Remove from heat. Ada gelatine. Stir until dissolved. Beat egg whites stiff. Add gelatine mixture grad ually while beating. Add vanilla, role into cool custard. Freeze in refrlgeratoi tray or freezer. If frozen In refrlgeratoi tray, beat once during freezing to a thick muih. Beat smooth with egg beater Return to tray and freeze until served Serves eight. Codling Moth May Be Controlled by DDT Drawbacks Present in Application to Apples By W. J. DRYDEN By far the most effective material tried against codling moth Is DDT, according to Prof. S. W. Harman of Geneva experiment station. These findings were backed up as more effective than arsenate of lead. Present drawback seems to be that in some cases rather severe in festation of red spider in the apple 1.—...,--... . „ .. . ... Coddling moth in apples. orchards follow the application of DDT. When DN-111 is used to con trol red spider, damage to foliage results. New York found that the destruction of the natural enemies of the European red mite by the DDT spray, resulted in increased numbers of that pest. Further tests are under way and care is advocat ed in spraying for codling moth until more information is available. Where heavy spraying with lead arsenate has not controlled codling moth, growers are justified in adopt ing a DDT program. Persian Bed Many Persians sleep in a kurisee, a type of bed consisting of a table placed over a pan of burning char coal and covered with a carpet. The sleeper lies beside the table or par tially beneath it, under the edges of the carpet. Armstrong of Swannanoa have announced the marriage of their daughter Mar garet Ethel to John J. Buckner, son of Mrs. Jack Newis of New Haven, Conn., on Wednesday, July 31, at Bethel Methodist church. The bride was given in marri age by her father. She wore a dress of white eyelet with white hat and ice blue veil, and carried a spray of pink rose buds on a white Bible. A cousin, Miss Nan Allison, was maid of honor. She wore a dress of blue eyelet with white accessor ies and a corsage of red roses. Edward Pierce was best man and Roy A. Armstrong, brother of the bride and D. L. Creasman, uncle of the bride were ushers. The mother of the bride wore a rose sheer dress with a corsage of white roses. The Rev. R. V. Masters, pastor of the Bethel church, performed the ceremony. The church was dec orated with pink and white gladi olus and candles. Miss Patty Ban ner, pianist presented a program of music. The bride is a graduate of Swannanoa high school and at tended Western Carolina Teach ers’ College. Mr. Buckner 'was educated at Bamardsville high school and received his discharge from the army in November. Mr. and Mrs. Buckner will reside at 172 South Liberty Street. Cement Raised Pigs Show Excellent Gain It is possible to raise pigs profit ably on concrete according to find ings of a Minnesota experiment. Pigs kept continually on concrete after they were 10 weeks old, and during 105 days of fattening, gained exactly as much as pigs fattened on pasture. Feed consumption was about the same, the pastured pigs eating more corn but less mineral and protein. Disease control was easier with concrete raised pigs. Read The Ads.
