In college there are 197 girls divided among classes as follows: senior class 11, junior class 24, sopho more class 53, and freshmen class 109. As was to be expected North Carolina led all states in furnish-: ing students with 58. Virginia was second with 23, and South Caro lina third with 27. They expect to have a family re union this weekend. Dr. B. L. Hallman of Atlanta, Ga., and Miss Margaret Anne Hallman of Saint Mary’s school, Raleigh, will arrive in Sanford Friday. Expected Saturday are Mr. and Mrs. Perry White of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Mrs. White is Mrs Byrd’s sister. o MR. AND MRS. J. H. Thursday, Oct. 24, 1946.—BLACK MOUNTAIN NEWS—I Students From Swannanoa At Council Meet Five members of the senior class of Swannanoa High school attended the North Carolina Stu dent Council congress held at Lee H. Edwards High school October 21-23. More than 200 delegates, rep resenting some thirty-eight North Carolina schools, attended the three-day meet which adjourned yesterday. Barbara and Leatha Martin, Leonard Clayton, Julian Craig, and Quentin Enloe were the attending delegates from Swan nanoa. D. Tiden Ramsey, vice-chair man of the North Carolina Board of Education, was the principle speaker at the opening session on Monday, October 21. His topic was “Democratic Government and its Relation to the Student Coun cil.” Mr. Ramsey pointed out in his address that “the leaders of tomorrow are formed in the Stu dent Councils of today.” Following Mr. Ramsey’s ad dress, the delegates attended the three panel discussion groups. Group one discussed “Student Councils Promoting Better Rela tions Between Students and Ad ministration.” The second group dealt with various student prob lems, while the third discussed “Student Councils As a means of Promoting Citizenship.” The Tuesday program followed the same line as the previous day, while a General Assembly ended the three-day program. The Coun cil Constitution was read during the assembly, followed by an elec tion of officers to serve during the 1946-47 term. Winners, Losers Honored At Dance o A dance sponsored by the senior class of Blac'k Mountain High school was given Friday night at the club house in honor of the football teams from Black Moun tain and Swannanoa. Music was furnished by a local string band and by the school’s record player. In charge of the program was Pat Sawyer, chairman, assisted by Jack Brown and Pete Barnwell. Chaperons were Mr. Nesbitt, Miss Gilbert, and Miss Whitesides, of the high school faculty, and Mrs. Callison representing the parents. Closing Team At Moore General Here for the purpose of provid ing assistance in the scheduled closing of Moore General Hospi tal are the following men from the Seventh Army .area: Lt. Col. Sanford Preslar, Major Milliam A. Harvill, Major Edward Krish, Capt. Bartholomew Peterson, Capt. O'tto Robinson, and Lt. Howard Erwin. The men plan to be at Moore General from three to five days to complete their work. Contest Winners The membership contest con ducted by the Parent Teachers— Association of Black Mountain, from September 19 to October 18, netted the club treasury $175 that. will be used in the work of the organization. Mrs. Zeb Sawyer, as chairman of the membership committee, directed the contest. A total of 690 new and honorary members were secured. Mrs. Whitaker’s first grade room won the primary grades, and Mrs. Hudgins’, fifth grade room was high for the elementary grades. These rooms will be given a Halloween party in their room on the afternoon of October 31. Sky Troop Vet Visits Here o Morris D. Ray of Barnardsville, former member of the 11th Air borne Division and veteran of 34 months’ service in the South Pacific, visited friends and rela tives in Black Mountain Wednes day. After joining the sky troops at Fort Benning, Ga., Morris went overseas shortly thereafter and took part in campaigns on New Guinea, and other islands in that area. He took part in the libera tion of the Phillipines and was wounded on Corregidor. He has recently been released from the hosptial at Oteen where he was treated for the reoccurance of malaria contracted in New Guinea. Mr. Ray is a grandson of Dave Atkins of Black Mountain. —Mrs. Jim Foster was a dinner guest Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Parsons and family.
