C., last Friday night to at tend the charter night banquet of the new Candler Lions club. The new group was sponsored by the Asheville Lions club and several from there and surrounding com munities were among the 250 that attended. H. R. Mauney, district governor, presented the charter to the new club. Jimmy Daniels, international director from Greenville, S. C„ was the principal speaker. ORPHANAGE TO BEGIN BASKETBALL PRACTICE The boys at the Mountain Or phanage will begin basketball practice soon in preparation for the coming season. At present there are 12 boys who have indi cated that they are interested in the cage game and it is hoped that a strong combination will be found in time for the opening game. WILLIAMS’ GUESTS Mr. and Mrs. John P. Williams recently visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Williams. —Mr. and Mrs. James S. Street, and son Tommy, visited Mr. and Mrs. Paul Turner in Ridgecrest Sunday afternoon. City Grocery Orphanage Team Loses Hard Battle o The Mountain Orphanage grid ders, playing their first game of the season, lost to an Asheville team Saturday, 25-7. The game was played on the Swannanoa High school field. The winners scored in every period while the Orphanage lads pushed over their tally in the third quarter, the scoring play be ing a five-yard plunge by Ray White. The losers lost another touchdown when the receiver raced out of the end zone in re ceiving a pass. Outstanding was the passing of Ray White and the smooth defen sive work of the entire forward wall. The following - boys saw action for the Orphanage: Billy Cooper, Robert White, Ronnie Murphy, Harold McDonald, David Freeman, Clifford Smathers, Joe Ingle, Dean Nichols, Roger White, Joe Holt, and Clyde Reece. They have no definite plans for the future, but Major Reinhardt is considering entering public health work. GIRL SCOUTS TO OBSERVE CHRISTMAS The Girl Scouts extend an in vitation to all parents, members of the troop committee, and any sponsor who would like to attend their Christmas Play. It will be held in the Fellowship room of the Methodist Church, Thursday, December 19, at 8 p. m. Second Cookbook Edition Appears o RALEIGH, Dec. 11—The second | edition of “Favorite Recipes of North Carolina,” 128-page cook book containing 340 recipes, is ready for general distribution, it is announced by Agriculture Com missioner W. Kerr Scott. Sponsored by the state depart ment of agriculture and the N. C. Dairy products association, “Fav orite Recipes” has been purchased by approximately 30,000 dairies and housewives throughout the nation. The cookbook contains 16 pages presenting foods in their natural colors, 28 black-and-white photo graphs, and a special four-page index on the various types of cheeses. In North Carolina, the price is forty cents; out-of-state, fifty cents. Miss York Kiker, home econo mist and dairy -.marketing specia list with the department, selected recipes for the book, consulting hundreds of North Carolina wo men regarding favorite southern dishes. A total of 20,000 copies were published in this second edition, Scott said, bringing the total in the two editions to 40,000. FREEMANS HEAR MESSIAH Mr. and Mrs. D. R. Roberts of Black' Mountain is one of the forty-one highway patrolmen to be commis- j sioned on December 16. Having I successfully completed an inten- i sive training course under the sponsorship of the Institute of Government of the University of North Carolina, he and the others were presented certificates of award which will entitle them to I commissions, after which they will be assigned to various sections ' of the state. The class this year was the largest ever to be turned out at one time since the inauguration in 1929. SWANNANOA P. T. A. WILL NOT HOLD DEC. MEETING The Swannanoa Parent Teach er Association will not hold the December meeting because of the dismissal of school on the regular P. T.
