The duh room was very attrac tive with the many floral decora tions which were contributed by i the club members. After the business meeting, at which Mrs. H. W. Baucom presid ed, Mrs Erank Buckner presented Penn H inter, who gave an inter esting talk on the care of potted plants. The tals was followed by an informal discussion which gave the women an opportunity to ask questions concerning their vari ous plant problems. Mrs. -W. I. Willis was in charge of flower arrangements, and prizes were awarded as fjduws: First, Mrs. W. A. Hamilton; Second, Mrs. R. L. May; and Third, Miss Grace Thompson. The two run ners-up were Mrs. Dinsniure Craw ford and Mrs. R. W. Seawright, who were presented with orchid corsages by Mr. Hunter. The flowers were judged by Mr. Hun ter and Edith Wright. Punch and wafers were served by the following hostesses: Mrs. W. I. Willis, Mrs. Harris, Mrs. Joe Moore, Mrs. H. C. Moore, Mrs. R. L. Hurst, Mrs. W. M. Pate, Mrs. N. L. Perkins, Mrs. Robert Guy, and Mrs. Perry Morgan. SENIORS FETED WITH PICNIC BY TEA AND TOPIC CLUB Seniors of Black Mountain High school were entertained at the Club House last Friday night from 6 till 10 p. m. with a picnic party given by members of the Tea and Topic club. Mrs. R. T. Greene was general chairman for the arrange ments. After Mrs. Rose Holman wel comed the group, the supper was served, buffet style, on the court. Members of the Tea and Topic club and their husbands w-ere in troduced to the seniors, after which games, planned by Mrs. Roy Taylor, were enjoyed by all. R. T. Greene won the “husbands” game. Other features of the program were the singing of the school song by all, reading of the class prophecy bp Jane Callison, and dancing to the music of the nickle odeon till ten o’clock. The club house was decorated in ! blue and white, the class colors. o MRS. D. 0. McDOUGLE I ENTERTAINS CIRCLE TWO I Circle No. 2of the Black Moun tain First Methodist church met with Mrs. D. O. GRADY M. MELTON of Swannanoa who were married recently in Pineville, La. Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Z. E. Hall of Swannanoa, the bride is a graduate of the Swannanoa High school and for the past few months has been correspondent for the Black Mountain NEWS. The couple will reside in Swannanoa. Baptist church will hold a general meeting Tuesday, May 27, at 7:30j p. m. in the memorial room of the' church. The Pauline Arnold Circle will be in charge of the program. Principal speaker will be Miss Susan Currell, Bible teacher in the school and former missionary in Japan. The subject will deal with the work of the missionaries in Japan. n LUCY WRIGHT CIRCLE MEETS The Lucy Wright circle of the First Baptist chuch met Tuesday, | May 13 at the home of Mrs. James A. Marshburn with nine members present. Mrs. Marshall Mott I taught the last chapter of the study book, “Shining Like the j Star”. I -fr Say You Saw It In The NEWS .■—- ■ t Four Injured In Crash o A head-on collision at 11:30 p. m. Saturday night on State street in the west of town sent four peo ple to the hospital and severely damagd both cars. The collision oc curred in the middle lane just west of the Gulf filling station. Those injured were a Mr. and Mrs. Spencer of Hickory and Mr. j and Mrs. Robert Lee Stepp of j Black Mountain. All were admit i ted to the hospital but were later I released, according to police. HOWARD LYTLE BURNED BY GREASE PIT FIRE Howard Lytle, colored station attendant at the Garland Home and Auto store, was burned on the hands and forearms Monday morn ing from a fire which occurred in the grease pit. The injured man was admitted to Moore General ' hospital. ■ | The accident occurred early Monday morning while Lytle was i cleaning the grease pit, which is ! located in the northwest corner of 1 the building. When the fire broke ! out Lytle jumped out of the pit . but lost his footing and fell back. He was later pulled out by Austin Burgess, and the fire was extin guished. THREE F. F. A. TEAMS , TIE FOR FIRST For the first time in the history of the F. F. A. federation three “ teams tied for first place in total ' points won during the year in all - contests held. The teams were Black Mountain, Flat Creek, and ’ Swannanoa. The schools competed ' in ritual contests, crop judging, ' basketball, field day, and live stock judging. ’ C. J. Rich is the advisor for the local chapter. HIGH SCHOOL NINE ’ LOSES OPENER, 13-4 l The Black Mountain High school ' baseball nine opened the season Friday afternoon at Valley Springs by dropping a 13 to 4 de cision to the home team. Stinchcomb returned Monday from Raeford, Lumber ' ton, and Fayetteville, where she 1 has been visiting relatives and 1 friends since May 1. Last Sunday she attended a cousin reunion in Raeford, at J which 47 were present. She was accompanied home by her sister-in-law, Mrs. Luther Papp of Raeford. ’ ARRIVES TO SPEND SUMMER j Dr. W. D. Weatherford arrived 1 Wednesday from Berea college, Berea, Ky., and will spend the f summer at his home in Black Mountain. Arts Club To Have Exhibit The next meeting of the Black Mountain Arts club is scheduled for June 5. It is planned to have ! it at the Club House on Lake Tom ahawk and it will he in the nature i of an exhibition of the work of members and of other interested artists and craftsmen in the Swan- . : nanoa valley. Each person is in vited to bring a collection of paint ! ings, pottery, metal work, wood carving, weaving, furniture or any other handicraft or needlework. It is the hope of the club to encour age the gifted and to discover new talent. There will be no entrance fee. The exhibit will be open to the public the afternoon of June 5, from 3:00 p. m. to 5:00 p. m. mem bers of the club will meet for a covered dish supper and a brief business meeting. Mrs. Mary E.
