Ridgecrest, i OVER THE MOUNTAIN By Alice Rondthaler Black Mountain college i; one of the few college- in the United Slates to be owned by its faculty ar.d entirely controlled by its teachers and the student body. The faculty has ultimate control of college proper.; and educational discipline. The college has neither trustees r.or the -sual administra i tive officers, such as president and deans. The faculty elects from its membership a team of feliows which administers the finances and makes faculty appointments. Student officer; attend tV.uit meetings dealing with the genera: affairs of the C liege. To take the place of a board of Trustees, such as most colleges have, there is ar. advisory coun cil, the members of which func tion not on legal but merely in an advisory capacity. There are j twenty members of the advisory' , council. At least once during each year, a meeting of the council is scheduled at the college, though because of the fact that its mem bers are from far distant places, visits are usually made when indi -1 viduals find it possible to come. ' Several members of the advis ory council are expected to visit ' the campus this weekend. One 1 member, Mrs. Anna D. Jamieson of Newton Centre. Massachusetts, arrived on Monday and is spend i sng the week, visiting classes, I talking to faculty and students, ; keeping in interested contact with : the development of the college. Another member, Fred Wale, rep | resentative of the Rosenwald Foundation of Chicago, is expect ed on Friday. Dr. Erwin Straus, j formerly teacher of psychology at the college, now Director of clini cal psychology at the veterans' hospital at Lexington, Kentucky, hopes to visit the college soon.
