We believe that this paper can he a real boon to our community. Our purpose is to. fill it chuck full of items of interest and profit to everyone,” says the Black Mountain NEWS of August 1940. The editorial staff was com posed of Robert Smith, editorials; - Tommy Roberts, stuff and non- j sense; Allen Melton, Bulletins; Al- ■ fred Callison, clubs; Harris , Barnes, illustrations; Everett ( Stephenson, sports; Luque Med ford, Jack Silvers, and James ( Osteen, reporters; ' and Norman . Bowlin, director and advertising. The subscription rate was 75 cents - per year. ; On page one the boys tell the world that they are sponsored by ] Waycaster-McAfee post, American ( Legion, No. 129 of Black Moun- < tain. On page two they tell of the j novel contest which they have be- 1 gun in the paper. A story of 232 1 words has been written and scat- ; tered through the paper from page ; to page. The street square dances were ■ becoming more popular each Fri- i day night and the Tea and Topic i club had just been organized by i a group of young married women who placed a limit of 12 on the i membership. Jack Silvers wrote of a Boy Scout camping trip to Mills River, which must have been quite an affair. Accompanying the hoys were J. O. Williams and Mr. Bowlin. A gal named Margie, who was in another party, made a strong impression on the boys. On Friday night, July 26, .1940, Allen Melton decisioned Carrol .Swayngim in a boxing match at scout hall. Luque Medford wrote a vivid blow by blow description of the match which would have been a credit to a much more experi enced reporter. In fact, he includ ed everything except the resin off the fighters’ gloves. An unidentified member wrote of the hike to Mount Mitchell “enjoyed” by 11 members of the patrol. The Black Mountain Lions club had a very enjoyable meeting, July 25, as guests of Herbert Sanders at Blue Ridge. What the Lions enjoyed most was the fine steak dinner with all the trim mings. Black Moun tain Drug company announced that they were headquarters for Boy Scouts in Black Mountain, Potter Feed and Fertilizer com pany was handling seed, groceries, hardware, and feed, and Herb Sanders out at Blue Ridge was of fering meals in the private dining room at give away pries. For in stance breakfast cost 40 to 50 cents, lunch 65 to 75 cents, and dinner cost from 75 to 85 cents. Sunday dinner was SI.OO and Sun day supper 85 cents. (Remember the date, this was August, 1940.) French Broad Cleaners says "If your clothes aren’t becoming to you, they ought to be coming to us.” R. T. Hill was running a grocery store at Stafford’s garage east of the city limits, and the owner of box 583, Black Mountain was offering an electric stove with an automatic oven for sale for SIO.OO. RINGS GO TO FLORIDA Dr. and Mrs. Louis Ring- and children, Frieda and Billie Ann, will leave Saturday to take Mrs. L. B. Ring to her home in Ozona, Florida. On their return trip they will spend some time with friends in Mount Olive, N. C. —Dr. and Mrs. Charles Brabee have arrived from Dunedin, Fla., and have opened their summer home on the Blue Ridge road. —Clarence Kennedy has been visiting his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. C. G.
