MILLER CELEBRATES EIGHTIETH BIRTHDAY Mrs. H. A. Miller was honored on her eightieth birthday last Thursday evening with a party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Dougherty. Guests were Dr. 11. A. Miller, Dr. and Mrs. S. Borns tein, Mrs. Gustova Brown, Buzzie Brown, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Greenwood, and the honoree. ARTS CLUB EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE HOLDS MEETING The executive committee of the Black Mountain Arts club met at the public library October 4. It was decided to hold an open meeting of the Arts club in the library Thursday, October 14, at 8 p. m. to ascertain ways in which further development of the club should be directed. BERNICE GREGG WEDS S. C. GILLIAM IN GEORGIA Mr and Mrs. Paul Gregg of Black Mountain have announced the marriage of their daughter Bernice to S. C. Gilliam, son of Mr and Mrs. Edward Gilliam, on October 10 at Clayton, Ga. The bride wore a street length dress of pink wool and a black top per, black and pink accessories, and a corsage of pink carnations. Mrs. Gilliam is a senior at Black Mountain high school. Mr. Gilliam attended school at Lake Lure and at Black Mountain. He is no wemployed at Beacon Man uracturing co. at Swannanoa. Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Reyburn accompained the couple to Clay ton. They will reside temporarily at the Padgett apartments on Montreat road. MRS GUY HONORS MISS V A NETT A BLACK Mrs. Robert Guy entertained Tuesday afternoon at her home in Ridgecrest at a bridal shower honoring Miss Vanetta Black, whose marriage takes place at the Ridgecrest Baptist church October 16. The ladies of the Woman’s Missionary Society of the Ridge crest Baptist church assisted in entertaining. Garden flowers were used as decoratons throughout the house. The tea table was covered with an imported lace cloth centered with a crystal bowl of asters, clematis, and dahlias. MRS. MACKNEY HONORED BY CLUB The Hatohin’ Patch club met Friday night with Mrs. Chet Sobol. Mrs. Joe Mackney, who is leaving soon, was presented with a set of dishes from the group. Refresh ments were served to Mrs. Carl Myers, Mrs. Karl Kerlee, Mrs. Pat Randolph, Mrs. Gustova Rrown, Mrs. Anne Randolph, Miss Martha Covin, Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Finch, and the honoree. State President Addresses Club Thirteen members of the Busi ness and Professional Woman’s club, including the president, Mrs. William Hickey, attended an in spirational meeting of District One of the State of N. C. Sun day afternoon at the YWCA in Asheville. Highlight of the pro gram was a summarization of the activities of the club by the state president, Mrs. Kathryn Shipman of High Point. Miss Alice Pratt, director of District One presided over the meeting, the theme of which was “How Standing committees Can Function Throughout The Year.” Reports were given by contact chairmen of standing committees. Two new clubs welcomed into the Federation by Dr. Irma Henderson Smathers were Wayne sville and Black Mountain. Spruce Pine members were host ess at the social hour which fol lowed the business meeting. Attending from Black Mountain were Mrs. Ruth H. Kennedy, Mrs. Carolyn Dougherty, Mrs. Bessie Carr, Mrs. Ruth Woodcock, Mrs. Garnet Greenwood, Mrs. Elaine Clark, Mrs. Edith Holcombe, Mrs. Clara Rondel, Miss Sara Kitchen, Mrs. Myrtle Stephenson, Mrs. Frances King, Mrs. Lu Brown Gregg and Mrs. Hickey. AT STADIUM SATURDAY Coach Eugene Byrd’s Dark horses will journey to Memorial Stadium Saturday afternoon where they will clash at 3:00 with the strong Ben Lippen gridders. With victories over Biltmore, Weaver ville, and Oakley under their belts, the locals will shoot to make it four in a row. Farmers Ball Team To Dance For Truman At Raleigh Saturday The Farmers Ball square dance team will dance for President Truman at the North Carolina state fair at Raleigh Saturday, October 16. This team won the championship at the 21st annual Folk Festival held recently in Asheville. Walter Davis and his Mt. Mitch ell Ramblers were selected as the best string hand. Bill Reynolds, substitute caller for Raymond Peek, was chosen best caller. This team and music appeared at the Cherokee Indian fair and at the Bear Hunters’ club at the community building in Marion. Raymond Peek and four of his “doggers’’ went to the Railroad fair in Chicago. The four were Jack Peek, Bobby Bright, and Misses Byra, and Betty Crouch. This group will make a tour of Florida this winter. 0 E S Will Sponsor Halloween Carnival The Eastern Star will sponsor a Halloween Carnival October 29, 7 p. m., at the Club house. There will be a baby contest for babies up to three years. This is spon sored by the Teen Agers. If you have a baby and do not have a sponsor please call 5392. There will be a lunch counter with sand wiches, soft drinks, etc. Also a cake walk, fortune telling, fish pond, and a prize for the best costume.
