Basketmaking exhibit opens A?- The Southern Highland Handicraft Guild is presenting in the museum area of the Folk Art Center, "Basketmaking - An Educational Exhibit," This month through May, 1983. The Folk Art Center is located on the Blue Ridge Parkway . nearOteen. Admission is free. *{" The exhibition presents the materials and techniques of .basketmaking along with a 'focus on finished baskets. ;Baskets of North Carolina are ^featured and include those created by Cherokee basket Jmakers as well as a basket jnaker from the Piedmont of ^North Carolina. Four-day Smokies hike The Warren Wilson College Outdoor Club will lead a four day hike into the Great Smokies during the Thanks giving holiday. The group will leave at 7:30 a m. Thursday from the Gladfelter Student Union on the school's campus in Swan nanoa and return Sunday. Backpacking equipment can be rented from the college's environmental education de partment. Oid-timey meais served The American Legion and Auxiliary Post 56 of Marion will serve meals from the log cabins at Old Fort from 11 a m.-7 p.m. Dec. 2 to open Old Mountain Christmas this year in McDowell County. The main meal is $1. Come early, eat, go through the museum and see how the tunnels were built from Old Fort to Black Mountain. Christmas trees exhibited The Southern Highland Handicraft Guild is sponsoring the second annual Christmas with the guild Nov. 26 through Dec. 31 at the Folk Art Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Oteen. Theme trees decorated by Asheville garden dubs and an international tree trimming party co-sponsored by the American Field Service and Asheville Rotary Club are features added to the music and exhibit programs of last year. The international tree trim ming party is planned to give foreign exchange students a flavor of Christmas in Ameri ca. The event is the first of what the co-sponsors expect to become an annual tradition. Scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 12 at 2:30 p.m., the party in dudes Christmas music, holi day goodies and trimming of the tree by exchange students. Other features of the month-long celebration in dude a member's tree which is to be trimmed with hand crafted ornaments by Guild members who live throughout the southern Appalachians and a Community Tree which will be trimmed with orna ments created by children in the community. On Nov. 12, Dan and Amy Snyder took a group of 20 young people from the First Babtist Church of Swannanoa on an overnight Fall Retreat at Fairview. This was led by a team from Gardner-W ebb Col lege. The Rev. and Mrs. Groce Robinson, Dan and Amy Snyder attended the Baptist State Convention in Fayette ville, N.C. on Nov. 15, 16 and 17. Della Bryant and Sue Bur ress are home from the hospi tal. Ed McMahan died this week. The Buckeye Baptist Church celebrated Thanksgiving with a big dinner Sunday, Nov. 21 after church. Margaret Bryant, church hostess, said about 100 people ate dinner.
