, POSTMASTER BRADY. , ARCIU11ALD BRADY APPOINTED I tiSTMASTER OF CHAIlLOTTE, .LOCAL POLITICAL GOSSIP. Ctl. JskisMB I'edises T Kan Against MrDsnell. Tim PresiJent yesterday iuiututl Archibald Brady jssstmsster f CHar lolti. This spjioiutinimt udss lon local . strujfgle between Charlotte Kepabll . cans. Mr. Brady wttt opposed by near : ljr ail tlis port workers here. Hit bucking consisted of u few prominent :.. gentlemen who ore Republicans from principle, but who cache w locul politics. The appointment U in keeping with the President' policy to build up a whitetnian Republican Party ia the . South. It wsa made claw to Mr. Har rison that Mr. Brady bad decline! to ' run on the Republican ticket for the Mate nenato, ana that no nou even scratched the local ticket. Thine are strong point in tha North and Wwl Sfraiust an applicant for oflloe; but horu :n the Bourn, tney wem to nave weight In favor of an applicunt. in . other word, Mr. Harrison rutin-r seeks , to enoouraije tho idea of an Indian dent genteel white Reuiib'lcati who is willing to fly in the face of tlm negro vow. At i lie negro vote nan rnther tend ed to defeat the Republican party in the South, than otherwise, the President's policy is eminently practical xJ iticx Tocal PoLltics. Ksatiig Uist fr t'antlitUtsfor Mayur AgaiBHt MeWswtdl. The negroes are irrowlnn restive un- der the idea that there is likely to be no contest for the mayoralty till year. The darky ia a "floater" who believe in Dudley's principle of "blocks of live," ana it breaks bin heart to think of an election where tltere is onlv one candidate. At Brat it wo tliouiclit that Col. Wrn Johnston could be persuaded to be an Independent candidate; but that hope lias to be aoanuonM: col. Johnston on Monday, in reply to a direct question from a Democratic worker who is in sympathy with the Colonel in hie pro tective tariff view, mid he had d- dined overture to become a candidate for the mayoralty; and further, that on no eoudltion would he allow his uame to be used. Now, in the face of this manly and si together honorable and direct state ment from Col. Johnston, there are persons who for their own ends, would seek to discredit the Colonel's veracity, or sincerity, by saying that he will be run anyhow. Of course, every one who knows Uol. Johnston feels tliut such ru mors ore as unjust as unkiud; ami tl.tit any attempt to drag the Colonel into contest, must meet with a sound rebuff and rebuke. Another rumor that was passed around among the' faithful!' disgrunt and "blocks of five" crowd, is thnt Jim Minis is to be nominated by the negroes; and that under the gutso of his candidacy the forces will be ortnu Ued and .marshalled for the election and that on the day before election, the name of Col. Johnston will be on the tickets instead of that of Si inn. However true this mar Dtostotheinten tion of the "floaters ""in blockaof five," no one, for a moment, would believe that (Jul. Jolinston would tolerate such a ti ming with him. w nether or not bmia will be a can didate is another matter; but that is hardly probable, as the object of the negroes is to have a coutest, in order that their"inlluouce" may bo appreci ated. The appointment of Archie Drady it; postmaster, over tho earnest opixmitioii of so many local Republicans, will not tend to harmouize the Party iu the municipal election. THE XKtlKIIKS' MKKTIMI. K. A. Mr Niarh was Unanimously Elect ed (bairmaa. The negroes of Charlotte had arruni; ed to hold a convention last night for the purpose of nominating a mayor, lty some misunderstanding, the court house key had not been secured, and, consequently, they could not get into the court house. A meeting wan therefore held in the Mayor a Court room to decide iion an other night for holding the oonven tion. John Wilson, the ucgro carpenter, moved to elect F. A. JicNineh Chair man. The motiou was carried nuani mously. K. A. MoNinch then took the chair and called the nieetinir to order. A motion was mnd mid carried that A convention be held on Friday night next tn the court bouse. A commute waa appointed to make the necessary srrangements and secure the key of th court honso; after which the meeting adjourned. AN EXCIT1NH CHASM TbrKB the I'lljr After a Thief The Thief Escape. esterdy arternoou a negro man was seen running at full tilt through the lower edge of town near Lid doll Co. 's machine shops. The people on the otreetH atopiied mid stored in idle curiosity at Die coon who seemed so anxious to move to another part of the city. Very soou, however, there were seen, running iu the sume direction, and at no grvut distance from the negro, threo other negro? and a white man. It was very apparent that the four in the rear were in pursuit of the fleeing coon. As soon as the pursuers caught sight of the punned, they gave a veil of "StopViief'" uud redoubled their exertions.' At this war whoop, several by -slanders joined in the clia.se, which proved to lie n very lively one. The ncRro had guined considerable dietaeceon bis pur suers, but they seemed determined to catch him. He looked pretty well fag ged out, and so did they; but still the chase continued. They ran him all wound the lower edgo of town, up 5th street, and finally into Log town. When the coon reached this section of tho city, he wasttrideaUy at home, and he easily succeeded iu dodging his pursu ers, who gave up the chase in disgust. A Cubonk'Uc reporter, upon inquir ing the meaning of th it chase, was 1n-" furuiod Hut the negro hud just ut-rtd a house near the old fair grounds. The 1 l :.'.fM' . .'f.. .X- .. woman of the bouse had gon over to a neighbor's, and, upon hf return, she found the man quietly going through her house. He ran as soon as her saw her, and she wevt over to Mr. Riglsr's place near by, anJ informed Mr. Higler of her discovery of the thief. The Presbyterian Church gave a aupper and bazaar at Finch's Opera House last night that eclipsed anything of the kind ever given in Lexington. The Rev. Mr. McCorkle, the new Presbyterian minis ter, was present, and was introduced to all our people. He seemed to enjoy the occasion. All had a pleasant time, and financially, the entertainment was a great success. The amount realized was near t00. A number of our people returned yesterday from Salein, where they had leen attending the Easter festivities, which they say far exceeded thdbe given on former occasions. The Prohibitionists of Raleigh are a game lot. At tho regular meeting of the County Commissioners lor this month they presented the petition of more tnan thirteen hundred voters liv ing in Raleigh township, asking that an election be called on the second Tuesday in Juno to determine the question of "license" or "no lioense." The Com missioners, following the law, could only recognize such names as appeared on the registration books, and by this rule, tne petition tailed by 41 names. Next day the Prohibitionists started a fresh lot of petitions ont and now we see that the Commissioners are called together for the 26th inst., to receive another petition. We learn that the petitioners are cer tain of success this time, and so we mar count on a tilt for wet or dry the elec tion to take place on tho 10th of June. A Blow at the fiosktr. However that may be, we would advise our neighbors in the "cradle of liberty1' to eat less "goober" and drink less milk before retiring at. night or perhups it would be better to give the thieves more goobers and milk, with a little lemon juice and less freedom on your premises. ROBERT M. DOUGLAS. - A Ssi sf Steakea A. Doaglass Lives ia Nsrtk Caroliaa. Vasblngioa Post. It is not generally known that a son of Stephen A. Donglas, of Illinois, was born in North Carolina, but such was the case. When the keen Yermonter had won over the Illinois Democracy to send him to Congress in 1843, he wss but thirty years of age. There the "Little Giant" met Representative Da vid S. Reid, of North Carolina. Reid was born April 19, 1813, and Donglas April 23, 1818. They were the infants of the twenty-eighth Congress, and a warm friendship sprung up between them. As a result of their acquaintance Douglas married a kins woman of Reid 's, Miss Martha Martin, the daughter of a wealthy North Carolina planter. The son referred to Robert M. Douglas was born within thirty miles of where he now lives, at Greensboro. He is now at the Ebbitt In physical appearance he bears considerable resemblance to his noted father, though rather slighter. He has also inherited his share of brains. At the age of nineteen he was Private Secretary to the Governor of North Carolina and during the first four years of President Grant's admin istration was his civilian Secretary. In 1872 he was appointed marshal of North Carolina, which position he held for several years. He is now practicing law. "The western end of North Carolina," said he, "is strongly Republican. We have our votes counted there, too, as our majority is a white majority. Down in the block counties the Republicans fail to get their rights. If tho offices are judiciously distributed I think the party will be aided, but at present there is a strong sectional feeling. Before this the offices have proved an injury, and not a benefit. Counties which went strongly Republican last fall, with the Democrats in the offices, were Democratic when the Republicans had the positions. "We would like to see the widow of Judge Thomas Settle made postmaster of Greensboro. The Judge left a fine house but very little estate. He was one of the strongest Republicans iu the State, and the appointment would be only just." New 3lbt)crti8cmcnt8. p-toti'iOA MONTH can be mle working )roru.
