Fane 16?THE BRUNSWICK BEACOl Sheriff! BY TERRY POPE Year-end statistics show the level of reported crimes was about average in Brunswick Coun:y throughout 1984, said Sheriff John Carr Davis. In an interview Friday, Sheriff John Carr Davis said officers had 'notjo 1 5Q5 jnyocti ontlnng nf oil crimes compared to 1,371 from a year ago. Although the statistics show approximately 70 fewer crimes will be reported in the county this year, Davis said the department still needs to step up its patrols by deputies throughout the county in 1585. "If we can get additional personnel, I'd like to increase our patrol division, and add an in-service training officer," Davis said. "We will attempt to do so in the July budget." You'ro really not robbing the actual crime rate, or increasing it any either," Davis said. "1 do feel like we've closed more cases successfully this year than we did last year." N .C JMS3 919 t-tiMS ommunicat police and emergency communications in certain areas of the county. "We hope to have it in operation by the end of January," Davis said. "It will give us county-wide coverage, which we haven't had before." uead spots in communications exist mostly in the Leland and Southport areas, forcing officers to contact the dispatcher at the department in Bolivia by telephone. "We haven't had anyone injured as a result of the dead spots, but we have had some problems in getting back-ups to our officers," Davis said. "The weather has some effect on the reception. It's worst in the summer iime. When the foliage gets off the trees, reception gets a little better." During 1984, Du vis said ns noted un increase in the number of prisoners held in the Brunswick County Jail for breaking and entering charges and sex-related crimes. "I don't feel like there is more going on," he said of the rise in the number of reported sexual offenses. "People are coming forth and reporting it mote than they used to." Although the jail populatio-;i rate has remained high for the year (more than 20), during the holidays it dipped down to around 10 prisoners in December, Davis said. "That's the first time we've been below 20 in a long time," Davis said. By the end of the year, many of the prisoners heinp held in iail worn fan. ing minor charges rather than felonies, he said. Two of the 10 prisoners were being held in connection with warrants issued by departs ments in other counties. Davis also said ne hopes the department's drug squad will receive help in 1S80. An increase in drug offenses has kept Detectives Lt. Richard Burgess and David Crocker busy throughout the winter months, he said. "What we're concentrating on now is the local problem," Davis said. "There does not seem to he an increase in the smuggling of drugs. At Shallotto Point RUING HOME it TUC W BEACON On Ml At SHAUOTTf POINT GROCERY J r_ ___ I jML. ?
