their Christmas trees this year, said
Brunswick County Agricultural Extension
Director Milton Coleman.
"On the choose and cut basis, we
had four locations operating in tlie
county," Coleman said. "A few more
were selling trees on wholesale basis
alone. We'll sell even more on the
choose and cut basis next year."
An increase in local sales next year

said.
Families who don't mind paying a
little more for a live Christmas tree
expect higher quality trees than
those found on wholesale lots. Since it
is important not to outgrow the demand,
many farmers are maintaining
small half acre to one-acre fields
>nd concentrating on quality rather
than quantity, Coleman said.
"Those folks will do okav." Coleman
said. "We're not going to have
a real tremendous income generated
through Christmas tree sales in this
county."
For the past two years, Wilmington

remaining on their lots after
Christmas, Coleman said, while

in Bolivia in early December, he added.
Approximately $1,100 in proceeds
from the extension office tree sales

a real good cause, and they're getting
a good tree in return," he said.
One Inland farmer sold 150 trees
from his lot with families coming
from as far away as Hamnstead to
chose a live Virginia pine, Coleman
said.
"It appeals to a lot of folks to select
their own tree," he added. "It's also
a memorable experience, or.c they'll
want to repeat next year."
Farmers who are careful about
their crop rotation can be sure there
will be trees available when the

North Carolina growers shipped
Christmas trees to California and
Slichigan this year, which was a first
for the state's market, he added. At
tuO present rate, state ismnris are
supplying from six to seven percent
of the national market for Christmas
trees, he said.
"Tiiey coulu very weii iake it up to
as high as 20 percent of the market in
the coming years." Coleman said. "A
lot of the trees shipped out-of-state
are grown in the mountain area."
Coleman said he heard many good
comments this year from buyers
regarding the local trees.
"Ouf unly concern was we didn't
have enough cold weather to force
the trees into dormancy to allow
them to stop growing," Coleman
said. "V.'c were concerned about how
that would affect the trees hoidii.g up
in the homes."
