BY TEnRY POPE
Expanding and upgrading the
Brunswick County Health Depart*
ment's animal control services may
cost the county an extra $60,000, or a
100 percent increase over the amount
appropriated oy conuiussioners lor
animal control last year.
A proposed budget adopted by the
Brunswick County Board of Health
Monday night reflects the increase in
county funding for the animal control
budget while other areas show only
moderate increases.
If approved by commissioners in
June, the animal control budget
wouid increase trom around ?6o,0uu
appropriated for tile 1984-85 fiscal
year to a requested $122,254 for
1985-86. The funds are needed to
place an additional animal control officer
on the staff and to expand the
animal control facilities to include 12
additional dog holding pens, said
Brunswick County Health Director
Thomas Blum.
"The bud"1?' inrrpnsp roflprtQ oijr

total package we think will bring the
animal control program to a point
where we can do things other than
just answer calls," Blum said.
Blum said the increased budget
would allow the department to expand
its animal control services itiio
the neighborhoods to familiarize the
communities with ''the ^esitivo
prevention side to tlie animal control
program."

fiscal year, creating the 100 percent
increase in the animal control
budget. Other budget requests call
for a 13 percent increase in county
funding for the environmental health
budget and a nine percent increase in
county funding for the health administration
budget.
The health board will seek $202,453
from the county for environmental
health services tliat reflect three major
changes within the department:
!) the addition of a new clerk to help
deal with the paperwork of the
sewage program: 2) the addition of a
computer monitor to store sewage information
on the county's terminal;
and 3) the funds to allow environmental
health to begin an infant car seat
loan program.
The health department expects to
receive $283,000 for its slate-funded
programs for the 1985-86 fiscal year.
Those stale grants and funds would
cover the maternal, child health,
family planning, Women Infants and
Children (WIC), adult health,
hypertension and tuberculosis control
programs.
An estinuited $415,000 in county
funds Is needed for the health administration
budget next year, Blum
said. The nine percent increase
reflects the audition of u clerk for the
ailult health program and other staff
members in children's health and
general clinic programs.
The board also agreed Monday to
write a letter to area legislators endorsing
proposed bills before the
N.C. tleneral Assembly that would
boost the county's dental health and
school health programs.
The bills, part of tlic state's tenyear
dental improvement plan,
