Sligh is donating a $5 prize and the s donate a book and book tag to the st C+i S UKJKS About 1,100 balloons slowly bobbled out to the central courtyard at Shallotte Middle School last Wednesday afternoon, surrounding Principal Mark Owens who began the countdown at 2:20 p.m. When the countdown reached zero, the sky became dotted with the colorful balloons and the school yard filled with the screams of children, an appropriate ending to School Library Media Day that was celebrated at all 11 county schools last Wednesday. Last week, April 14-20, was National Ubrary Week for all schools across the country. In North Carolina, all schooLs participated in the festivities on Wednesday by launching helium-filled balloons in unison at 2 p.m. At Shallotte Middle, the balloon launch was delayed by about 20 minutes. At Union Primary, the launch was also delayed by about 30 minutes for some students who were away on a class trip at 2 p.m. The students quickly launched their balloons before boarding the buses for home. Each student released a balloon with an attached address card including the student's name, the school and the title of the student's favorite book. Anyone finding one of the cards is asked to return it to the school along with information about where the card was found. At West Brunswick High School, student projects were also on display in the school library all week. On Wednesday, students in the home economics classes prepared international meals in the library. Science projects on display Included an experiment on the hatching of a chicken embryo from Mrs. Sue Pope's class. Computer quizzes were also open to the public. Brunswick County schools budgeted $88,360 for its library media supplies, or $10.46 for each child last year. There are 106,335 books in the 11 county schools for students to use. Sources of information available at the school libraries include filmstrips, slides, art prints, charts, maps, globes, audiotapes, microcomputer courseware, videotapes and models. Dr. Warner says she lias encountered y few problems. Dr. Warner received her medical degree from State University of New York at Stonybrook, and residency work in internal medicine at the iical College of Virginia and New Hanover mortal Hospital.
