Scripps-Howard National Spelling
Bee in Washington, D.C., in June.
For the second straight year, a
fifth-grader has taken the county title
from students representing grades
5-8 from six county schools. Burton,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. I-exie Burton,
won a 18-inch color television set
and trophy after winning the match
against 10 outer contestants last
Thursday night in Bolivia.
Sponsored by the Shaltotte Junior
Woman's Club and the State Port
Pilot of Southport, the spelling bee
concluded in less than an hour as the
field was narrowed down to Burton
and Shallotte Middle School eighthgrader
Crystal Boyette.
Ms. Burton will participate in the
national contest during the week of
June 3-7 in Washington, D.C., during
an all-expense paid trip to the
i nation's capitol. The annual spelling

Finishing third was Joseph
Southern, a sixth-grader from South
Brunswick Middle School. Southern,
last year's county champion as a
fifth-grader at Southport Primary,
was eliminated from the contest
after misspelling "panache." The
son of John and Frances Reinsburrow,
Southern received a trophy and
dictionary-thesaurus combination.

Nichols, won fourth-place and receiv
ed a dictionary and trophy. Seventhgrader
